They ordered Rosado to come out, and when he refused they began to break the door open. As the officers crashed in, Rosado lept from a window onto a concrete alleyway, witnesses and police said. He died minutes later at Jacobi Medical Center. Inside the room, police officers and building residents discovered the transvestites beaten and bloodied body. He was covered with stab wounds and bruises, police said.

Olmeda described Rosado as an easy-going guy who had moved into the 5-story rooming house only three days earlier. He said the intersection of Jerome Avenue and 190th Street was frequented by prostitutes. A detective working on the case said it is nearly impossible to tell on sight which prostitutes plying their trade in the area are men and which are women. Some of these transvestites look sexier then some women," he said. I could see how someone could be surprised.

1 By Wendell Jamieson STAFF WRITER A bizarre case of mistaken sexual identity ended in the fatal screwdriver stabbing of a transvestite Bronx prostitute and the suicide of his killer early yesterday, police said. It began late Friday night when 47-year-old Augustin Rosado propositioned what he believed was a female prostitute in the University Heights section. The two headed to Rosados fourth-floor furnished room in a transient hotel on Cresten Avenue, police said. Once inside, Rosado discovered the prostitute was a male transvestite and flew into a rage, stabbing the unidentified 30-year-old man repeatedly with a screwdriver and hitting him with a metal pipe, police said. Residents who heard screams and banging inside the room rushed to the door and begged Rosado to open it, said Juan Olmeda, 34, who lives upstairs.

We heard a female voice crying for help," he said. We knocked on the door. We asked him to open it, but he Fire Evokes Deadly Memories YOUD LIKE TO SELL YOUR UNWANTED JEWELRY. GIVE US A RING. Our expert appraisers will be at Macy's Roosevelt Field.

Herald Square, is open every day except Sunday, from 1 0am to 11:41 p.m., fire officials directed trains to pass through the station without stopping. Several passengers on the platform were stranded when smoke in the lone staircase prevented their exit. The elevators werent working. Firefighters evacuated the stranded people just after midnight, when all service on the line was shut down for one hour between the Chambers Street and Atlantic Avenue stations. On Dec.

28, 1990, the same platform was the scene of the worst subway fire in city history. More than 900 people were trapped on a No. 3 train that stopped Bhort of the Clark Street station due to an electrical explosion. The resulting fire created smoke that caused two people to have heart attacks, one of whom later died, and injured 100 others. When you hear Clark Street, that kind of conjures up that terrible memory, Garden said.

By David E. Rovella STAFF WRITER Smoke from an electrical fire filled Brooklyns Clark Street station shortly before midnight Friday, stranding several passengers on the platform and evoking memories of a deadly 1990 fire there. The smoke started in an elevator elec-; trical closet and engulfed the mezzanine level, where the token booth is located. Transit Authority spokesman Termaine Garden said yesterday. It filtered downstairs to the platform, where several passengers were waiting, Garden said.

The token booth clerk, overcome by smoke, was taken to the hospital. Ten firefighters also were injured, none seriously, Fire Department spokesman Edward Harrington said. No other details were available. The two-alarm fire is still under investigation. After the smoke was discovered at NEW YORK NEWSDAY, SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 9.
