The closing Wednesday leaves CNN with no permanent staff members in the Persian Gulf for the first time since Iraq invaded Kuwait in August.

You never leave anywhere in this business for long. Well be back, said producer Jim Miller, who directed much of the networks coverage during the war. CNN made great inroads in the Middle East in an area that had not seen western news coverage, said Miller, citing Bahrains decision to broadcast the network 24 hours a day and wartime broadcasts in Saudi Arabia. The international press corps that reached a peak of more than 1,200 during the war haa dwindled to less than 10, supplemented by a constant stream of visiting correspondents. II The half-hour show airs from Monday to Friday at 7 p.m.

A spokeswoman for WLIW said yesterday that Cass would attempt to raise $350,000 from local businesses over the summer in an effort to resurrect 21 Edition next October. Last year, WLIW received $1.6 million from New York State. Under the new state budget, WLIW had expected to lose roughly a third of that amount in 1992. However, on Monday Gov. Mario Cuomo vetoed nearly $1 billion from the budget that waa passed last week.

That means that WLIW can expect $800,000 in state backing next year, half of what it received last year. Earlier, Suffolk County had eliminated $150,000 in funding for the station. According to the spokeswoman, WLIW has lost a total of $1.8 million from its $5 million budget for next year. The cuts will go into effect on July 1. Among its news people, Dara Welles, anchor of 21 Edition, will remain to work on news specials.

However, Doug Bell and Alta Snell, the programs other anchors, are expected to leave the station. All of WLIWs other local grams will go off the air, inchid On the Island, a cultural affairs show that airs Sundays at 10 a.m. Two other programs, Brainstorm-era, a quiz show, and Off Hollywood, a venue for amateur films, were also canceled yesterday. II By Verne Gay STAFF WRITER IN THE MIDST of a growing fiscal crisis, WUW 21, Long Islands public TV station, canceled its nightly news program, The 21 Edition yesterday. The programs final airing will be mi June 28.

The nme day, 15 part-time employees and 14 foil-time employees will lose their jobs. WLIW currently has about 60 staff members. The Plain view-based TV station blamed the cancellation on recent cuts in state and county funding, as well as increased costs for the Public Broadcasting Service programs that it airs. The fact that there is little hope for the restoration of funds in the state budget, compounded with cuts on the local level, WUW is fenced to cease production, Terrel Cass, WLIWs president and general manager, said in a statement yesterday. There is no other recourse at this point.

The loss of the program is a severe blow to the station, which has been attempting to increase local production, as well as create shows for national distribution. When Cass joined Ch. 21 in 1989, the establishment of a local news show was considered a top priorty. When The 21 Edition began airing on July 2, 1990, it became the first regularly scheduled over-the-air show that dealt exclusively with TV news about Long Island. 515-487-5780 71 8-352-6774 212-838-0567 000000000000 NpfY YORK NEWSDAY.
