"A lot of fine boys have gone through the sports program at Belvidere." Concerning his baseball teams, Lewis said "we are always a contender. The Big 8 has essentially the same schools as the former Rock Valley Conference. This year will be basically a building year with just one starter back, ''Jack Darby, but we'll be a contender for the title," Lewis said.

Lewis and his wife, Joanne, have four children, Betty, 18, a fresh man at Northern Illinois University, Mellnda, 14, Jason, 12, and Tommy, 9. University for two years and graduated from Greenville College. Greenville, 111., his. home town. Hunter received his masters degree from the University of Illinois.

Hunter, also a driver education instructor at the high school, and his wife, Doris, are the parents of six children, Vicki Lynn, 7, Linda Sue, 6, Klndra Jo, 5, Debra, 4, Sherone, 3, and Mike, 2 months. Hunter feels his team "has come a long way this season. Their play IS sometimes spotty, but I have been pleased with their progress." Four juniors have done a lot of playing for Belvidere ths year. Patrick is presently serving as athletic director and head football coach besides finding rime to teach five United States History classes. His first coaching job was De-LaSalle High School in 1944. He stayed there one year, then devoted all his time to playing professional basketball for the next seven years with Chicago American Gears.

They were world champions in 1947. He first attended Santa Clara College in California for three years before entering the armed services. In 1944 Patrick enrolled at the University of Illinois, Champaign, and was captain of the varsity basketball team. He is presently working on his master in Education Administration at Northern Illinois University. Patrick is married to the former Betty Shaw of Belvidere and they have three daughters, Mary Ann, 17, Peggy, 15, and Teri.

5. Patrick says he is "well pleased with his football team this year. Half the team was made up of Juniors and all the boys made a good showing for. their first year in the new Big 8 Conference." "We'll lose some- key men through graduation, and we'll be looking for some good running backs and ends," Patrick said. "But I expect the team to put on a good fight." McKenna also teaches physical science. McKenna attended LaCrosse State College and also received his masters degree in physical education from LaCrosse. He coached in Wisconsin for 10 years before coming to Belvidere. McKenna was head coach In football, basketball and baseball while coaching In Wisconsin. Algoma, was the last place he coached before Belvidere.

Regarding hi present Job McKenna feels "the situation presents a challenge from the coaching standpoint. We need to get highly organized in order to compete in the new Big 8 Conference." "There are no breathers in the Big 8. There Is always a tough game each week. We have a long way to go, but I think it can be done," McKenna said. Jackson 544-2985 JIM BARR Jim Barr is in his year as sophomore basketball coach. Barr Is also the head track coach at Belvidere High School. This Is Barr's eighth year in coaching and. ninth year as a teacher. He teaches civics at the high school.

Barr first coached at a small Colorado high school where he was responsible for basketball, track and the school's six-man football team. From Colorado Barr moved to Mt. Carroll. where he was bead basketball and track coach and assistant in football under Belvidere's present head wrestling coach, Mike Morris. Barr graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1951 and attended Colorado State Teachers College for his masters work.

Barr Is married and he and his wife, Janet, and two sons Victor, 7, and Gregory, 4, live at 920 Nevin Court. Concerning the sophomore basketball season, Barr felt "it is disappointing in the won and lost column but his boys were a good group to work with. Right now we are working very hard to win a couple games in the upcoming sophomore tournament," MIKE MORRIS Mike Morris, a Belvidere native, ha 8 been on the coaching staff for three years. Morris is head wrestling coach and an assistant in football and baseball and also civics. Morris spent his Jrst two years coaching at Mt.

Carroll, 111. where hij was head football coach, freshman-sophomore basketball coach and physical education Instructor. attended Northern Illinois University and presently is working on finishing his masters work in Education from NJU. Morris, needless to say, is quite proud of his wrestling team's accomplishments. They were outstanding in their first year in the Big 8 Conference.

Also, he was "very pleased" with the showing the Belvidere football team gave in their first year. "Injuries prevented us from having a real good year," Morris said. "If we get a few breaks, next season could be our good year, especially with seven starters back." Mike and his wife, Mary, are the parents of three boys, Andy, 3, Pete, 1 12, and Joey, six months. State Belvidere mm CANT DECIDE? JOE LEWIS Joe Lewis is in his 25th year in the coaching profession, with 20 of those years at Belvidere High School. He has been head baseball coach for 18 years and was responsible for getting the baseball program started in the school. In his 20 years at Belvidere Lewis has coached all the sports. When he started there were only two coaches, Lewis and Chuck Nihan, the present Boone County Superintendent of Schools. Lewis also serves as a physical education instructor and Intramural director.

He previously had coached for a total of nine years in Cochran, Hickston and Pox Lake Wisconsin. Goeser Is presently head sophomore football coach and an assistant coach In tennis and wrestling. He Is also a physical education Instructor at the school. He attended LaCrosse College in Wisconsin and received bis Master's degree from Northern Illinois-University.

In their first year in the Big 8 Conference, Goeser's sophomores wound up with a 4-5 record. He thought the boys "did well for their first year." Goeser is married and the father of three boys, Russell, 11, Peter, 8, and Michael, 2, and one daughter Susie, 6. His wife Mary teaches in the elementary school at Logan.
