Bloomington Normal Deaths B. Melvin LaFrence B. Melvin LaFrence, 69, of 223 Doud Drive, Normal, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Mennonite Hospital. He had been in failing health.

He was a maker of musical instrument cases in Hackensack, N.J., before his retirement. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at East Lawn Memorial Chapel, with Dr. Gordon White and the Rev. Clarence Young officiating.

Burial will be in Funks Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Mr. LaFrence was born April 5, 1904, in Jersey City, N.J., a son of Charles H.

and Maud Neff LaFrence. He married Mary Burza on July 4, 1926, in Hackensack. Survivors include his wife; his mother, Budd Lake, N.J.; a son, Bert 223 Doud Drive, Normal; a daughter, Mrs. Beatrice Noon, West Milford, N. three brothers, Vincent, Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.; Arthur, Budd Lake, and Calvin, Rock Island, and four grandchildren.

Mr. LaFrence was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Normal. Thomas C. LaFever Thomas C. LaFever, 28, of Centralia, formerly of Bloomington, died at 8:45 a.m.

Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital, Centralia. He had been ill for a week. An autopsy will be performed. Mr.

LaFever was transferred to Centralia three months ago by his employer, the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad. He was taken to Main Memorial Home. Heyworth driver faces drunk charge Wilmer Loren Kaufman, 45, Heyworth, was charged with drunken driving Tuesday night after his vehicle was stopped by Bloomington police one mile south of U.S. 66 on Morris Avenue. Kaufman posted $50 bond and driver's license pending a May 17 court appearance.

Camera workshop to focus on people Mrs. Barthorpe FARMER CITY (PNS) Mrs. Corinne Barthorpe, 68, of Van, formerly of Farmer City, died Tuesday. She was the wife of the late Grant Barthorpe. He died in 1951.

She will be cremated and the ashes returned to Farmer City for burial. Stephen Caley MOUNT PULASKI (PNS) Stephen Caley, 70, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday at St. Clara's Manor. His funeral will be at 8 p.m.

Wednesday at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, with the Rev. Eugene Kane officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday at the church. He was born at Cedar Falls, Iowa, April 27, 1902, a son of Stephen and Mary O'Leary Caley. He married Winifred Merritt in Galena, Sept. 24, 1935, She died Dec. 27, 1968.

Surviving are a son, Hugh, Mount Pulaski; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Wilson, Waterloo, Iowa; Mrs. Rose Breyman, Cedar Falls, Iowa; three grandchildren. Miss Bateman Central Illinois deaths Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today.

He was born April 18, 1895 in Effingham County, a son of John and Anna Mesnard Leith. He married Sylvia Martin Feb. 21, 1917 at Effingham. Surviving are his wife; three sons, Courtland, Dean and James all of Lincoln; a brother, Harry Calumet City; a sister, Mrs. Berneice Bailey, Effingham; seven grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren.

Locke again KAPPA Kapp's former mayor, Merel E. Locke, was returned to office Tuesday by a vote of 45 to 18 over his opponent, Mrs. Louise Armes.

Locke had been forced to step down from his post, just short of serving two terms, by a member of his village board who challenged his serving as mayor while also engaged in serving of alcoholic beverages. Locke's job was janitor and part-time bartender at one of Kapp's taverns. Locke resigned his public office, saying he could not afford to give up his job. When he resigned, another village board member, John DeBauche, decided to run for mayor as a write-in candidate to vindicate his friend, the mayor. Locke's name remained on the ballot, however, because the ballots already had been printed.

Then Locke decided to resign his job as bartender while keeping his job as janitor. At this juncture, De Bauche stepped out of the mayor race. Incumbent Village Clerk Ruth Ann Roberts was returned to office by a vote of 49 to 3 for her opponent, Mrs. Marilyn Oliver. Elected to the village board were Ivan Lock, 46; Jess Nevius, 42, and Donald McKinley, 27.

Issac Walker, presently on the board, lost his bid for re-election. He received 25 votes. Write-in candidate Clause Dixon received 18 votes. Lee H. Ellis dies; owned res restaurants Lee H.

Ellis, 75, who operated restaurants in Bloomington for many years, died at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday at Brokaw Hospital. Mr. Ellis and a son, Herb, now living in Palm Springs, were at 602 N. Main from 1953 until 1963, when the elder man retired.

His life in the restauarnt business started at an early age with his father, Liquor missing at Normal home Gin and vodka, valued at $13, was either consumed or poured down a drain at the 1105 Karin Drive residence of Donald Drummond, Normal police reported Wednesday. Drummond returned home Tuesday night to find that his back door had been kicked in by a burglar, police said. The burglary was reported to police at 7:10 p.m. Drummond, according to police, found the empty bottles. He reported that the burglar also might have taken a key to a safety deposit box.

Lee Budd Ellis, who had cafes in downtown Bloomington at the turn of the century. The Budd Ellis Restaurant was at 201 W. Washington in 1901 and at 105 W. Front in 1911. Later there was the Quick Lunch Room at 105 S.

Center. Lee H. Ellis was with his father until 1934, when he moved to 215 S. Main. He stayed there until 1953.

Herb joined his father in the business in about 1940s. Mr. Ellis lived at 109 W. Mulberry. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m.

Friday at the Beck Memorial Home, with Dr. Robert Calderwood officiating. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the memorial home.

Mr. Ellis was born Jan. 19, 1898, in Bloomington. His parents were Lee Budd and Margaret Westfall Ellis. He married Hazel Dillman Nov.

17, 1921, in Clinton. She died Jan. 30, 1964. Surviving in addition to Herb Ellis are a daughter, Mrs. Ermalea Doyle, 1225 E.

Washington; two sisters, Mrs. Florence Pochel and Mrs. Rose Price, both in California; a brother, George, Louisville nine grandchildren, and four greatgrandchldren. He was a member of the United Methodist Church. at 12:01 p.m.

MANSFIELD (PNS) Miss Josephine Bateman, 56, of Urbana, a former Mansfield resident, died Monday night at Mercy Hospital, Urbana. Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Stensel's Funeral Home, Farmer City, with the Rev. Arthur Howard officiating. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery.

Visitation will be 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. She was born June 11, 1916 at Mansfield, a daughter of Homer B. and Cornelia Hopkins Bateman. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Otto Temcke, Farmer City; a brother, Raymond Bateman, Lincoln; two nieces.

A brother and a sister preceded her in death. She attended the United Methodist Church. She graduated from Burnham Hospital School of Practical Nursing and worked at the Burnham City Hospital in Champaign for 15 years as a licensed practical nurse. J. Edgar Leith LINCOLN J.

Tuesday at Hopedale Medical Complex. He was brought to the Davis Mortuary. Mrs. Ella Stumpf DWIGHT (PNS) Marius Sorensen, 89, of Joliet, formerly of Dwight, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at St.

Joseph's Hospital in Joliet. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Von Qualen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert W. Kinas officiating.

Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. He was born Aug. 30, 1883, at Gardner, a son of Soren and Christine Sorensen.

He married Meta Beyer in Dwight in 1907. She died July 12, 1961. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Marie King, Joliet; a brother, William, Gardner; three grandchildren. Six brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

He farmed in the Dwight area before moving. Miss Diane Kohler PEKIN (PNS) The funeral of Miss Diane Lynn Kohler, 22, who died Monday of injuries received in a car-truck accident last Wednesday, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Church of the Nazarene. The Rev. Wilson Baker will officiate and burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Kuecks Funeral Home and after noon Thursday at the church. She was born Aug. 2, 1950, at Pekin, a daughter of Henry and Velda Taylor Kohler. Surviving are her parents; two brothers, Carl, Pekin; Steven, at home; three sisters, Mrs.

Loretta Shue, Mrs. Doris Osterman, Mrs. Shirley Woolard, all of Pekin. She was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and had been employed at the Americana Nursing Center four and a half years prior to entering the Nurses Aide program at Pekin Memorial Hospital. PEKIN (PNS) Mrs.

Ella Stumpf, 86, of Creve Coeur, formerly of Pekin, died at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at her home. Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Kuecks Funeral Home, with the Rev. James White officiating.

Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. She was born Jan. 6, 1887, at Monticello, a daughter of Charles and Jennie Hilst.

She was married to Edward Stumpf in 1907 at Peoria. He died in 1954. Surviving are two sons, Fred and Edward, Creve Coeur and a grandson. Four sisters and four brothers preceded her in death. Mrs.

Edna Bray CLINTON Mrs. Edna M. Bray, 65, of 805 E. Woodlawn died at 9:20 p.m. Tuesday at Dr.

John Warner Hospital in Clinton. She had been ill for some time. Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Pullen-Boos Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Nelson Steele officiating.

Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral chapel from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. She was born March 2, 1908, in Clinton, a daughter of James a and Mabel Ketterman Gregory. She was married to Carl Bray Sr.
