OUR HOMS E0KOTV knocks ran OUT THE SE LI Man Indicted In July 4 Queens Racial Attack By Wendy Lin The man police say was the ringleader of an alleged racial attack against several black people in Roeedale on July 4 has been indicted by a Queens grand jury. Michael Sima, 22, of Sayville, L.I. is charged in a 14-count indictment with second-degree assault, first-degree riot, aggravated harassment, and criminal possession of a weapon. The charges stem from a confrontation between two groups of people over the lighting of fireworks. Sims is expected to be arraigned on the indictment on Aug.

15. He is free on $5,000 bail. If convicted of the charges, he faces a maximum of seven years in jail. According to his attorney, James Paar of Commack, L.I., Sima denies the charges. Four others have been arrested in connection with the incident, in which about 30 white men armed with baseball bats and shouting racial epithets chased a group of black people at Brookville Park.

The four others are still under investigation, according to Richard Piperao, spokesman for Queens District Attorney John J. Santucci. The incident began at 11:30 p.m. July 4 when a white man approached Fab rice Thebaud, who is black, and told him to stop setting off firecrackers. Thebaud has said the man claimed to be a police officer and allegedly told him, I could just snap my finger and all six of you niggers would be dead.

Thebaud said he and his companions were leaving the park when the man returned with others carrying baseball bats and began chasing the group of black people, who included Thebauds cousins and friends, including some children. Thebaud, who is from Florida and waa visiting his family at the time of the incident, said he was punched and cut with a knife. He waa hospitalized for treatment of a cut on the cheek and a scratched cornea and released the next day. The four others who have been arrested and charged by police, but not indicted by a grand jury, are Gary Santanastasio, 24, of 248-27 Francis Lewis Queens, Robert Gadero, 25, of 1328 Crosby Avenue in the Bronx, James LaGreca, 17, of 253-04 149th Queens, and Richard DeCurtis, 18, of 167 Hamilton Island L.I. LaGreca is the son of Queens Assistant District Attorney Linda LaGreca.

Roosevelt I. Tram Closed for Repairs The Roosevelt Island tram will be shut down for repairs for the rest of the week after nine people were slightly injured Sunday when the cable car failed to stop and ran into its docking port, authorities said yesterday. The accident may have been caused by an electrical malfunction, said Maxanne Resnick, spokeswoman for the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation. In Sundays incident, the tram, which transports nearly 8,000 commuters daily to and from Roosevelt Island, failed to come to a full stop and struck the docking port at 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan. Nine of the riders fell to the floor and suffered injuries, police said.

They were treated at both New York Hospital and Bellevue Hospital and released. The tram also waa damaged. Resnick said bus service will be available between 59th Street and Second Avenue in Manhattan and the Motorgate Garage on Roosevelt Island while the tram is out of service.
