I Newsdmrlas Newaday Osier Muhammad By Hairy Berkowitz HEN DONALD TRUMPS plana for an Upper West Side megaprqject ran into a firestorm of opposition, he dumped flamboyant architect Helmut Jahn and turned to community-minded planner Alexander Cooper.

When developer Mortimer Zuckerman was scrambling to rescue his giant condominium and office complex at Columbus Circle, he switched from Moshe Safdies space-age design to David Childs more traditional look. And just this month, when Stephen Muss was forced to scale down plans for Brooklyns biggest residential waterfront complex, he picked Costas Kondylis to redesign the project to fit in with the Brighton Beach neighborhood. In the face of increasingly strong and sophisticated community resistance to large or intrusive projects especially in the past five or six years developers in New York have been forced to pay more attention to a buildings neighbors and neighborhoods. As a result, they have sought architects and designs that will win enough favor from civic groups or planners to overcome roadblocks that could delay or kill a project.
