finally; taking care of yourxarjspo Jl Jtsirr Hi Jf 4 ft v- ,1 jt Sugar, Hearns Looking Sharp FR72V RADIAL New-gensration. i cord. "Flow-through" i The June 12 Sugar Ray Leonard-Thomas Hearns rematch may turn out to be a mismatch or a sad reunion of two shot fighters on the wrong side of the hill, as some fear. But if so, it probably wont be the fault of Leonard, who looked sweeter than Sugar in a seven-round sparring session at his West Palm Beach training camp Saturday, or of Hearns, who seems to be approaching this one with his highest intensity level in years. Leonard worked mostly with Rodney Byrd, a young middleweight who came to fight.

And fight he did, going toe-to-toe with Leonard all the way and exhorting Leonard, loudly, to come on with it! throughout the 3Vfa-min-ute rounds. Al- INSIDE -though it was 16 BOXING days before the bout, Leonard ap-peared at his fighting weight he said 162 pounds and his repertoire of ring taunts and insults was in midfight form. For the seventh round, Leonard put on a Btick-and-move display that had the crowd alternately cheering and gasping. And in Detroit a day earlier, Hearns looked only slightly less impressive, mainly because he had to hold back on his inexperienced sparring partners. He, too, was at his fighting weight, about 163 pounds.

Both men appeared in the proper frame of mind to give top-notch efforts on fight night, a refreshing change from the norm in a sport increasingly populated by frauds, malcontents and fan-foolers. Ring on way out Fight result that slipped past most results pages: Bert Sugar TKO 6 years over Dave DeBusschere. Sugar, the former editor and publisher of Bing who was fired by owner DeBusschere six years ago, now has Boxing Illustrated, the industrys healthiest monthly magazine, while Ring, boxings erstwhile Bible, is about to pull a no mas. With debts estimated at $1 million, circulation down to about 25,000 and a last-ditch effort at a Bale to Los Angeles entrepreneur Jerry Buss apparently dead, most expect that Ring will finally take the 10-count. Its employees have not been paid in weeks, there is a monthly $5,000 obli- ei to the IRS that must be paid to Ring in operation, and there has not been an on-time monthly issue since March.

A sad ending to this magazine started by Nat Fleischer in 1925. Tick, tick tick Just six more shows including the June 15 Gino Gelormino-Anthony English 10-rounder before Madison Square Garden closes for two years of renovations, moving Felt Forum boxing uptown to the Beacon Theater. The major casualty of the move will be the legendary Garden ring, in which just about every boxer worth mentioning Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Rocky Marciano, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, Marvin Hagler fought at least once, with the Conspicuous exception of Leonard and Hearns. Boxings most famous ring is too high for the Beacons stage Bet-up, so a short-legged replacement will have to be found. In the meantime, the ring will be dismantled and stored until or if boxing returns to the 33rd Street site.

Not that its for sale, but wouldnt that ring make a great souvenir for a well-heeled collector with lots of space? But then you got to buy the four guys who set it up, said Garden publicist Tom Kenville. Theyre the only guys in the world who know how to put it together. Between the ropes Leonards people have been denying it, but the worlds worst-kept secret is that even though Leonard-Heams is for the WBC 168-pound title, there is a side agreement, insisted upon by Leonard, that neither fighter weigh more than 164 at the morning weigh-in. The fear is, of course, that a large man like Hearns can weigh in at 168 and enter the ring at about 173, while Leonard will have trouble weighing more than 165. According to sources, if either man comes in more than 164, a financial penalty estimated by some as $1 million per pound and by others as a flat $2 million, regardless of weight is to be deducted from the guaranteed purses of $14 million for Leonard and $11 million for Hearns.

Fire and Fear, the expected blockbuster, unauthorized Mike Tyson biography written by former Tyson confidant Jose Torres, already is on the stands at a few locations in Manhattan. One boxing insider who read the original manuscript said, It is devastating. It will positively destroy Tysons reputation, or whatever is left of it. The Trump Plaza people have insisted that Bill Cayton sign a document ensuring he will not bring a lawsuit or try to stop the July 21 Tyson-Carl Williams bout before they commit their $1.5 million to host the fight. Cayton is supposed to provide the document today Tyson and his guru, Don King, were unsuccessful in an attempt to get what a Trump executive called the same treatment afforded Donald Trump namely, full-time maid and butler service, immediate and unlimited room service, and unlimited use of Trump Air, a helicopter service between Atlantic City and New York.

They will be treated as they always have in the past, in first-class Trump fashion, the executive said. Neither Mike Tyson nor Don King has bought Trump Plaza yet Dennis Andries, jilted by the retiring Donny Lalonde, will now defend his WBC light-heavyweight title June 24 against unbeaten Australian Jeff Harding ABC has bought Edwin Ro-sario-John Duplessis for the WBA lightweight title recently vacated by Julio Cesar Chavez NBC will televise on June 11 Vinny Pazienza vs. Vinny Burgese for the Yo, Vinny! 140-pound title in Atlantic City. The Roy Jones-Stephen Johnson middleweight bout on the undercard also will be televised. Exclamation point Tuesday night, Top Rank matchmaker Teddy Brenner was trying to talk sense to Iran Barkley, who has been griping about his $400,000 purse for challenging IBF champ Michael Nunn on Aug.

14. Dont be an idiot, Brenner said. Youre making $400,000. Where else you going to get that kind of monqy? At that point, one of the ever-present boxing wise guys chimed in: Well, now that Harold Smith is out of jail Smith was convicted of embezzlement.
