Set to be syndicated to TV stations in May is the American Video Awards, which taped its fifth annual ceremony on Feb. 26 in Los Angeles. Think of this one as the Casey Kasem Video Awards: The veteran DJ is its perennial host. The program producers have the luxury of two-and-a-half months to play around with the footage shot at the Scottish Rites Masonic Temple (certainly one of L.A.'s trendiest venues.) So, the live AVA's don't need to run as smoothly as, say, the American Music Awards or the Grammys. As the record engineers say about their albums, "We'll it in the mix." The viewing audience will never know that the theater audience sat staring at a blank stage for 45 minutes smack in the middle of the show because a power generator ran out of juice, and the technician literally had to dash, can in hand, to the nearest Exxon station.

By scheduling its event two days after the Grammy ceremony, the fledgling National Academy of Video Arts and Sci- Tracy Scoggins and Shari Belafonte-Harper. When it's pared down to two hours, the show will probably move along quite briskly. Live, it lumbered.
