Television THE FRESNO BEE Thursday February 6 1 989 E6 6:00 PM He gave up directing to act in TV series By JERRY BUCK Associated Press I 00 PM 1 11:35 PM a murderer's grisly crimes (1 hr 37 min) LOS ANGELES Kevin Hooks was reluctant to quit directing to accept the starring role in the new ABC comedy the Mayor" "I was in the middle of directing every other episode of he recalled "I said Tm tired I need to take some time off1 When I was home my agent called me and said he had an offer of a series lead 6 turned down a number of series in recent years So I went to Universal Studios and read for them I got a call back but I felt it was pretty stupid of me to leave directing It's a gamble to do a series" Hooks who came to prominence in "The White turned it down "I was at dinner with a friend when my agent called the he said was like a conference call and they twisted my Hooks then went to his father actor Robert Hooks for advice "Dad told me I had experience as a director He said this would be good for me I re-read the script and called Dad and said 'Dad be crazy not to do this1" He stars in thle Friday night ABC comedy as 'a 25-year-old college graduate who runs for mayor and to his surprise elected Hooks as Mayor Carl Burke gets on-the-job training to cope with the demands of constituents and city workers Among the city employees is his father Alvin played by Al Fann Hooks has done 13 episodes of the show which made its debut in January nefcr the bottom of the weekly Nielsen: ratings Last week it finished 59th out of 67 shows cast as mayor of a city in Pennsylvania but
