Crawfordsville, Iowa, wants to challenge Ripon, for the title of birthplace of the Grand Old Party. "Crawfordsville is entitled to the distinction of being called the birthplace of this organization," says Iowa GOP chairman Tom toner. "We feel the matter should be openly and fairly investigated. "I am not unmindful that the usual claim is that the party was born in Ripon, March 20, 1854. But the convention at Crawfordsville antedated the Ripon meeting at least one month." Not only are Iowa Republicans gathering documents to support their claim, Republicans from around the state are being summoned to a rally in Crawfordsville next Saturday the "Great Crawfordsville Republican Reunion," they call it They will re-enact their version of the meeting that started it all as well as their version of the, Lincoln-Douglas debates.

Stoner says that after the rally, the organizers will decide whether to take the town's case before the full Republican National Convention in Kansas City in three weeks. "The people of Crawfordsville feel ripped off by Ripon," says Robert Fleming of Des Monies, chairman of the Crawfordsville Reunion Committee. "There were meetings being held all around the Middle West on the issues of slavery and all sorts of things and they are all sort of credited with bringing about the Republican party. Obviously, the first one held is the first meeting of Republicans." Stoner does not dispute that an organizational meeting was held at Ripon on March 20, 1854. But he says a meeting here in the United Secede rs Church on Feb.

23, 1854, was the GOP's true beginning. "It was a meeting of free soilers, abolitionists, various groups of people con-concerned about the extension of slavery," Stoner said. And he says records show the group called itself the Republican party. But even if the Iowa claim is turned aside, Ripon should not rest easy. Jackson, says it owns the title because the party's first platform was drawn up there in July 1854.

Friendship, N.Y., also makes a claim as the party's birthplace.
