these days From the mighty networks to tiny low-power stations television broadcasters are inundating viewers with a flood of shows featuring the video clips that have become almost a mandatory companion for every new record The shows vary widely in length and somewhat in format but collectively they have disproved once and for all the old notion that pop music and TV mix would say there are at least 200 shows out says Marc Rodriguez manager of video promotion for Capitol Records "It has been increasing progressively for the last two years swamped trying to help everybody that The biggest and best known commercial network entry is "Friday Night a labour show that NBC says is seen in 3 million to 4 million households every week CBS is not yet a player in the rock video game but ABC in June began a five-week trial run of a half-hour Friday night clip show called "ABC "Night Tracks" aired six hours on Fridays and seven hours Saturday cm Ted WTBS cable network claims viewers in 341000 households every week The show generally covers a broader spectrum of pop music than MTV which concentrates on rock to the exclusion of most rhythm blues mid country music There are also syndicated dip shows such as which takes a Top 30 approach "Solid and Gold which intersperse video with performances and which combines video and comedy In addition "almost every medium-sized city now has its own rock video Rodriguez said The shows are multiplying for two main reasons First MTV has shown decisively their popularity with younger viewers The channel is now thickly populated with ads aimed at the huge 12-to-34 year-old audience that tunes in at some point each week in 113 million households The ads contributed greatly to last financial turnaround for MTV which accumulated an enormous start-up debt following its inception in mid-1981 but in the last year has been showing profits on its day-to-day operations Video shows are also relatively cheap to produce major plus for the smaller programs Record companies which consider the clips a promotional expense supply them free of charge with two notable exceptions "Friday Night has been paying a total of about $1 million a year to use clips since its inception And newly profitable MTV in a move observers say all but precludes any serious head-to-head competition recently announced "exclusivity" agreements that will give it first crack at new videos by four record companies in exchange for cash payments Citing confidentiality clauses in the agreements MTV declined to give details or name the four companies saying only that together they supply 35 percent of the clips shown on MTV But industry sources and trade publications have identified the four companies as giant CBS Records RCA MCA and Geffen Records In the CBS agreement for example MTV reportedly paid 58 million for 30 exclusivity on 30 percent of the videos the company releases in the next two years Sources say MTV would be allowed to choose two-thirds of the videos in question Though MTV sources deny it observers say it is no coincidence the agreements were announced at the same time that parent Warner Amex Cable Communications filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission for a public offering of some 5 million shares of MTV Networks Inc common stock "This insures (MTV) a steady supply of product and it also makes it difficult for cable operators to drop said "Friday Night producer David Benjamin who notes that some cable companies are unhappy about decision to levy per-subscriber charges as the cable contracts come up for renewal Benjamin points out that the agreements do not cover all major videos since superstars such as Michael Jackson produce their own clips and retain all rights to them For the record companies the pacts represent a long-awaited contribution toward the rapidly-escalating costs of producing videos which now average about per clip SALE 42999 Save $50 8300 BTU air conditioner with 90 EER and
