BRUCE FARRIS Bee sports writer ANAHEIM Fred Lynn's leadnff homer triggered a six-run sixth-inning rally and the California Angels held on for a 6-5 victory over the Oakland A's Thursday for a sweep of their twi-night double-header The Angels won the opener 6-2 behind the five-hit pitching of Geoff Zahn as Lynn and Doug DeCinces connected for two-run homers In the nightcap Oakland right-hander Matt Another shot back at 68 is Ray Floyd and at 3-under 69 are Tom Kite Craig Stadler and Johnny Miller But even on a near-perfect day it wasn't all pars and birdies Last year's player of the year Tom Watson staggered in with a 76 and the 1981 player of the year Bill "Buck" Rogers had a 78 Fresno's Tim Norris overcame a shaky start for a 38-35 1-over 73 better than a dozen others Nicklaus said he played well but was happiest with his putting "I holed the longest four putts I've made this year which is unusual for me" he commented "I rarely make 30-to-35-foot putts I think there is an element of luck in those but I guess not for some I'm just trying to figure out how I did it The greens were rolling about as smoothly as I've ever seen them" Nicklaus drove the ball well until the last few Tournament of Champions Actually there was nothing wrong with the Golden Bear Jack Nicklaus that a hot putter couldn't correct Nicklaus showed that Thursday when he shot a 7-under-par 65 to claim a two-stroke lead after the first round of this $400000 tournament at the plush La Costa Country Club The talk about back remedies and pills which dominated an interview Wednesday was secondary to the before retiring the side In the first game Zahn struck out seven and walked five in picking up his second win in three decisions The 36-year-old left-hander has a 20-1 record during April in his career The Angels jumped to a 2-1 lead against Chris Codiroli 1-1 in the fourth when Lynn drew a one-out walk and was forced on a grounder by Jackson DeCinces then followed with his fourth home run of
