WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 4, 2010 THE WICHITA EAGLE 3B Stepson, 27, dies after being stabbed Monday night BY STAN FINGER The Wichita Eagle A 27-year-old man was stabbed to death during an argument with his stepfather late Monday night in south Wichita, witnesses told police. The stepfather waited for police to arrive and surrendered peacefully, Ojile said.

He was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of seconddegree murder. was born to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Rex Shelton October 8, 1927, in Briartown, OK. He had three older sisters, who along with others, called him "Sweet He lived up to his nickname.

The family lived in a tent in Seminole, OK, which at the time was an "Oil Boom" town. The Depression arrived and caused businesses to shut down, so the family moved back to Briartown. Bill's father found another job with Gulf Oil Company in Osage County, OK. This county is where Bill received his first eight grades of education in a two-room schoolhouse. He was the first in this county to make a perfect score on the county math test, a subject he loved.

In 1943, the family moved to Drumright, OK, where he was drafted into the Army in January, 1946. He entered the Army at Camp Chaffee at Ft. Smith, AR. He was sent to Camp Robinson, Little Rock, AR for basic training. Subsequently shipped to Inchon, Korea in 1946, where he was a sergeant the Military Police until his discharge in May, 1947.

Bill's higher education began at Central State college in Edmond, OK. There he met Rene. It was August 31, 1948. they married and by June, 1950, to them was born a beautiful little girl, Vicky. Then the unthinkable happened.

The Army recalled Bill. He was sent back to Korea to serve in that war, being a First Lieutenant when he was discharged in 1952. By the end of 1953, he was a father to another beautiful little girl, Shauna. Business was calling. Bill went to work in the Land Department for Texaco in Tulsa.

Positions held at this company were: Scouting Drilling Wells, Division Order Desk, Title Analysis, Assistant District Land Man, Division Coordinator, which was promoting drilling deals between the districts and divisions. It ended in January, 1962, when he resigned from Texaco to become an Oil and Gas Lease broker in Wichita, Kansas. His friend. Dean Murrow, showed Bill the ropes (maps) and helped him get started. Dean later retired to his favorite place, Grand Lake, OK.

1963 was the year Bill began Oil Exploration. With his good friend Walter Martz, a geologist, they began working together. Then an engineer, Grant Canady, joined the coffee group to hear Charley Carlock tell of his oil deal promotions of the early booming pools. This group functioned like a company, except the group had no name, no contracts. They were bound only by honor and integrity with a smile and a handshake.

In 1971. Bill and his wife, Rene, opened their first health food store. Their final count was seven health food stores, an art gallery, antique store, a dinner club in southwest Missouri and finally owned farms in Kansas. Visitation with the family will be 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2010 and the funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 5, 2010, both at Downing Lahey Mortuary East. Saturday, August 7.2010, at Frederick Memorial Cemetery, Frederick, OK. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Mell (Farrar) Shelton; sisters Raychel Usher and Faye Martin. He is survived by his wife Rene: sister, Lois Giddeon; daughters, Vicky Shelton and Shauna Shelton; one granddaughter, Leah Gossett; and soon-to-be born great-granddaughter. Bill's spirit was entwined with entrepreneurship. He loved diversity and variety and had a deep appreciation of art.

He always found beauty in nature and loved to nurture all creatures that came along. Those who loved him and were privileged to call him "Sweet William" will mark his death date in memory: August 1,2010 at St. Francis Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. She was born in Paris, France, in 1923. In 1951, she married MGen (USA Ret.) Woodrow Stromberg to whom she remained devoted until his death in 2000. She will now be rejoined with General Stromberg at the Arlington National Cemetery. She resided at Larksfield Place for a number of years, most recently in the Health Care Center where the caregivers and staff afforded her outstanding care and support. They were greatly appreciated by Jacqueline and have been an inspiration to her family.

Before coming to Wichita in 1991, the Sumner's had a farm near Mentone, Alabama after each retired from jobs in Chattanooga. Harriet was the first female electrical engineer in the TVA system. Harriet and Walter were amateur and professional actors. They performed in many plays at the Frye Theater and Little Theater in Chattanooga, the Crown Uptown in Wichita and various Hollywood movies. Both were SAG members.

In Mentone, the couple established a community theater in Ft. Payne, Alabama's old Ft. Payne Opera House producing, directing and acting in plays. Harriet may be remembered by her part in the Long Walk Home, the story of the Montgomery bus boycott in which she played with Whoopie Goldberg the star of that movie. Harriet's talents were not limited to acting, directing or engineering, she also was a painter, sculpture, writer, and photographer.

Harriet had two children by her first marriage to Joseph Darwin Lewis of Chattanooga, Tennessee, who died in 1972. The two children are Courtney L. Ruthven, Ph.D. of Wichita, a psychologist and business woman and Joseph, a successful Chattanooga businessman and property owner who died in 2008. Harriet was the oldest child of James D.

Courtney of Mt. Vernon, IL and Elna Ruth Russell Courtney of Anniston, AL. Don Courtney, her youngest brother, was president of a Chicago Advertising Agency. Don and her other brother James David Courtney both predeceased her. Harriet and Walter Sumner, continued their professional print modeling and TV commercials after moving to Wichita.

Harriet has three living grandchildren, Beth Snyder and Laura Moore of Wichita and Les Darwin Ruthven of Houston, TX and six great grandchildren: Dylan and Colin Snyder, and Chelsea Moore of Wichita and Megan, Mary and Rachael Ruthven of Houston, Texas. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Unitarian Church of Wichita at 7202 E. 21st Street at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 7,2010. The Harriet C. She was born near Potwin, on January 31, 1927, to George and Eva (Wadley) Long. She had worked for over 25 years at Kansas Aluminum, Inc. in El Dorado. On September 27, 1945, she was married to Ben Smith, he prededed her in death. She was also preceded by her twin Dorothy Anderson; sisters: Velma Smith and June Saunders; and brother Ronald Long.

She grew up in Alva. Oklahoma, later moved to Wichita and worked as a nurse at County and Veterans Hospital before moving to Seattle and later retiring in Arizona. She was the first born child of Bill and Jessie Nordyke.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bill and Marvin Nordyke; sisters, Joan Hicks and Josephine Rubarts. Three daughters, Gloria, Patsy and Sandra also preceded her in death.
