"Deadly Friend," a youth-oriented thriller, shows that all you need these days is a Silicon Valley microchip and a bright 15-year-old.

"Deadly Friend" ia filled with a hodgepodge of elements reminiscent of other movies and characters, not the least of which are the super-intelligent robots like "Star Wars R2D2 and C3PO. However, here were faced with a sort of bionic teenybopper perhaps the ultimate do-it-yourself project of a teenage boys fantasies. Matthew Laborteaux plays Paul Conway, a teenage whix so bright hes studying advanced, science at a university. His sidekick ia Bee Bee, a robot that he built in the garage out of old parts. The yellow automaton does things for its master such as fending off hostile motorcycle gangs and deterring car thieves.

Unfortunately, Bee Bee gets blown to bits by an old lady with a shotgun when he trespasses on her lawn. His main pal gone, Conway turns to girls. He becomes smitten with Samantha (Kristy Swanson,) the cute new 16-year-old next door. Samantha is the victim of an abusive father who throws her down a flight of steps. Shes about to die; the hospital pulls the respirator plug.

The new movie, like Cravens previous effort, maintains its undercurrent of suspense all along. Laborteaux, known to millions as Albert Ingalls in "Little House on the Prairie," gives the 15-year-old scientist the 1n of a football hero, and Swanson has plenty of toothy, cheerleader-type appeal. As might be expected, there are a number of grisly scenes. Filmgoers may also find Friend spends an inordinate amount of time playing to young audiences there are Halloween anti-authority pranks, and the heros dinner-table relationship with his mother seems like a vignette from a bad television sitcom.
