SACRAMENTO Gov Brown Tuesday said California immediately will begin planning a rail line to transport passengers at speeds up to 150 mph along some of the state's most heavily traveled routes The rail service modeled on efficient high-speed passenger trains in some European countries and Japan would be the first of its kind in the nation administration officials said "We are proceeding immediately with feasibility studies" to develop a rail system "utilizing technology that has been proven effective in a dozen or more countries" Brown said in a press release issued by his Sacramento and Washington offices "A California high-speed rail system could provide safe convenient energy-efficient trains at speeds from 125 to 150 mph and provide the added benefit of stimulating economic growth municipal power utility in Fresno The idea is dead Just like that the council voted 5-2 to kill further study of whether Fresno and its power consumers would save money if the city acquired Pacific Gas Electric Co's power distribution system in the metropolitan area Council members Dale Doig who proposed the municipal -utility and Joe Reich voted against the motion to end the utility investigation The Fresno council's action followed by less than 24 "hours the same decision by the Clovis City Council Fresno council members explained their decision pointing to the unanswered
