Esabfahed1876 Member FSUC The Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum is in rough financial water, but its directors said yes- terday they expect to keep the Navy aircraft carrier-turned-museum afloat.

One day after filing a petition for reorganisation under Chapter 11 of the federal code, the. Intrepid's directors said they will oper- ate the museum as usual during bankruptcy pro; ceedings and will work to improve attendance. "As an American, I see this courageous vessel as a symbol of our country's dedication to tree-' dom," said Zachary Fisher, chairman of the In- tfepid Museum Foundation, which has operated the museum since August, 1982. i The Intrepid not only contains American hiV tory within its steel wails, it is history," Fisher said. First commissioned by the Navy in August, 1943, the Intrepid served during World War II and the Vietnam War and helped recover space capsules in the Mercury and Gemini programs.

The Navy donated the Intrepid to the museum foundation in 1975, when the ship was scheduled to be scrapped. Directors and museum staff members did not -explain how they will attract more visitors to the Intrepid, located at Pier 86 on the Hudson Rive? at West 46th Street. The museum exhibits air- craft from all periods of American aviation and equipment used for undersea exploration equip- ment and satellite communications. Foundation Vice President Lawrence Sowinski said museum organizers expected the surround- ing area to develop more quickly than it has, bringing year-round traffic into the neighbor- hood. The lack of public transportion in the area also hurts, he said.

This is the development area of the future, and we're in the middle of it," Sowinski said. "We just happened to be here probably a couple of years ahead of everybody else." Dad Gets 20-Year Term In Family's Drug Case By Pete Bowles A retired Brooklyn carpenter who pleaded guilty to Belling heroin to avoid going to jail and to avoid testifying against his family was sen-' tenced to 20 years in prison yesterday by a fader-' al judge. In imposing the stiff sentence against Joseph Fama, 52, of Borough Park, U.S. District Court Judge Charles P. Sifton said: It has to be estab-" Iished that the risk of dealing in narcotics on the1 scale you dealt in is too great a risk to be indulged in." He also fined Fama $100,000.

Fama, his wife and four of their children were, arrested after a raid on their home in April, last year, in which FBI agents netted $8 million in heroin and cocaine and $3.3 million in cash. raiders also found 28 guns. Fama's wife, Barbara, 46; bis daughter, Tonir Ann, 25, and two sons, Joseph 22, and Daniel, 20, were convicted of various drug charges laatv month and are scheduled to be sentenced by 8if- ton next week. Another son, Gary, 19, has been' acquitted. Each of the women face up to 15 years 1 in prison and the men, 5 years.

As part of a plea bargain, Fama pleaded guilty to operating a continuing criminal enterprise which distributed 50 kilograms of cocaine during one year. In return for the plea, prosecutors agreed he would not have to testify against his family and that he would be sentenced to at least 10 years and no more than 20 years in prison, instead of the life imprisonment he faced. i Stun-Gun Charge Revived A misdemeanor conspiracy charge linking five i Queens police officers accused of using stun guns on suspects, dismissed earlier on a legal techni- -cality, was revived yesterday in a new indict-1, ment. The five officers pleaded innocent during arraignment on the new indictment and were re-1 leased under the same bail conditions. The indictment, which contains two of the 28 charges now facing the defendants, was dismissed last month by Acting State Supreme Court Justice John Gallagher on grounds that it failed to identify the officers' roles in he alleged assault scheme.

The new indictment is slightly re-worded. -Paul Moses BUY DIRECT and SAVE!
