The fact that uuemV oymcnt Is practically unknown any more and that construction work is keeping many skilled men busy and that industries are working full forces are important factors and lend encouragement to the situation. The indications of an immediate settlement of the miners' strike is another bright spot on the horizon.

With a railroad strike contributing from the strike of the miners, fuel supply is expected to prove a problem of serious proportion or many Illinois industries within a short time. While most of the plants still have In storage sufficient coal to last tor another sixty days, not all are as fortunate and from some cities cries of distress ulrcady are be-lig heard. The difficulty tip to this time has not been inability to obtain coal, but reasonable price. Recently buyers have found it almost impossible to Kct guaranteed notations for coal at the mines, with the result that shipments in some cases have been follow od by hills at rates as high as i market In thin section of tho etate, bankers and business men expect that business conditions will show the effect of this new financial blood very soon. Crop reHirts Ind-cate from fifteen to twenty-three bush ds to the tcre in this territory and it is taid to be of good quality.

Quite a considerable quantity of the wheat tins been contracted for and more will be sold now that the price has reached the dollar mark. No ne wheat has actually been delivered in this county yet but there will be some threshed before next Saturday. "The only people from the country that we see now are old men, women and children," sail a merchant. "An able bodied farmer is so lure In town that he is a curiosity. And even able bodied women from the farm are pre'ty rare.

And you know what hapens to business when the farmers can't come to town." The Meadows Manufacturing company has increased its forces to 120 and has a larga amount of or-dyers on hand. The reduction in freight rates which went in'T effect on July 1, released many car load shipments which had been held up until that 'date. The company hopes to operate on full time and with an Increased force during the remainder of the year.

The Hamilton Stove works is now and I'J, with freight, for steam coal, a prohibitive price for most manufacturing purposes. Continuance of the shopmen's strike for any length of time will cut off coal shipments, because the railroads will lie obliged to conserve motive powerin order to keep passenger trains in operation. Kentucky coal for domestic use is still quoted at $9 a ton delivered. Some families have bought at this price in ton lots, as protection against being found without fuel should the miners' strike continue so long that the demands for deliveries cannot be met in the early fall. No great quantity is being purchased, however, most householders anticipating lower prices before October.
