26 Gdlesburg.Register-Moil, Golesburg, 111. Thursday^ June 7, 1973 Indonesian City, World Bike Capital.) Offers Different Sights for Tourists By MURRAY J. BROWN UPI Travel Editor JOGJAKARTA, Indonesia (UPI)—The feuUwhip snapped like a rifle shot as it slashed across the backs and buttocks of the six young men prancing and cavorting like high-spirited horses on the oven-hot grounds of the temple courtyard. Travel Topics I winced in sympathy but the dancers never even flinched. And liihc Indonesians- men, women and children— . crowded into the compound looked on impassively. For this was the legendary "horse trance dance" of Eastern Java ill whioh participants work themselves into a stale of self-hypnosis in which they feel no pain. Straddling a bamboo framie woven in the shape of the upper part of a horse, they danced to pipe, drum and gong until they collapsed or readied such a frenzy they iiad to be overpowered by the whipsnapper and his assistants. DURING THE hour-long .performance, the man with the whip — identified by our, guide as a village chief—fed some of his "horses" with grass. He also stuck pins, without drawing blood, in and out of the cheeks of A boy who also swallowed a couple of double-edged razor blades. The dance in the village temple at Mbener, Bugisan, was one of the highlights ol a tour of Jogjakarta and the surrounding countryside by our group of 15 American travel writers. The visit to Indonesia — my first — was sponsored by the Indonesian Tourist Board and the Indonesian airlines Garuda along with the Tourist Development Unit, of American Express and Pan American World Airways. WE FLEW INTO Jogjakarta from Singapore on Garuda jet planes—about a 3!£-hour flight including a stopover in Jakarta. Americans need a valid passport, a visa obtainable at Indonesian consulates for a $3.50 fee, and a letter from a travel agent or transportation company confirming the traveler is a bonafide tourist and has onward passage. Also required are validated certificates of vaccination against Smallpox and cholera. Jogjakarta, usually called Jogya, is the cultural, historical, educational center of Central and Eastern Java. It also must be the bicycle capital of the world 1 —the streets are wall to wall with all types of the two-wheeled vehicles. Our guide said it had been estimated there were at least 150,000 in this city of 325,000. Pedestrians have to dodge among them to cross streets while motorists drive with blaring horns to open paths in the whirring ranks. NOT MANY tourists come to Jogya and our party drew smiles of welcome and shouts of "halloo" from young and- old wherever we went. The children were particularly friendly and anxious to try out their English, which-hasi replaced Dutch as the second language in this archipelago stretching between Asia and Australia south of Malaysia. Two went out of the way to guide me to a shop on Malio- boru Street, the main thoroughfare and shopping dis The Navy pays off. Jogya is known for its batik and silver-4 bought a hand-printed shirt for myself and a bracelet of filagree silver for my wife for less than half I was .prepared to pay. There were many ©then bargains, including delicately- engraved and jeweled ceremonial daggers with wavy blades — the Indonesian kris. But I decided to wait until Bali — the next stop on our itinerary. Garuda services Jogya on its Baii routes. INCIDENTALLY, some of Indonesia's most famous artists Jive in or near Jogya and their paintings and sculpture are displayed at their homes and in art galleries and museums. Bonafide original works of art may be brought into the United States without duty, if you should decide to buy. Jogya itself is dominated by the Sultan's palace, an outstanding example of classical Javanese architecture with its exquisitely-decorated pavilions. Some of the outer buildings have been converted into classrooms for university students. The surrounding area abounds , w i t h architectural treasures of the 8th and 9th Centuries when the Indian influence was still strong. No visit — no matter how brief — could be complete without seeing the 8th Century Buddhist temple of Borobu- dur, about 25 miles north, wesit of Jogya, one of the world's largest. Built on the summit of a steep hill with a series of square and circular terraces, the main stone stupa stands 125 feet high. EQUALLY SPECTACULAR is the Hindu temple complex of Prambana, built in the 9th Century, and .the largest in Indonesia. There are eight shrines, including one dedicated to Shiva which is 157 feet high. The complex, about 12 miles northeast of Jogya, is the site of the famous Ramayana ballet festival held during the MI moon from May through September. We stayed at the tap-notch Ambarrukmo Pailace Hotel in the suburbs, which offers 105 , air-conditioned rooms, swim-'| ming pool, cocktail lounge, night club, restaurant and coffee, shop. O.T.
