Ralph Brody says a survey of district farmers indicates the drought will cause losses in production this year that will cut gross farm income 884 million And to produce on 23 per cent less acreage than last year will mean a 191 per cent increase in the use of underground water because of the cutback in the big surface supply through the San Luis Unit of the Central Valley Project Brady says The survey represents responses Survey: 23 Less Acreage 191 More Underground Water Needed from farmers of 282500 acres more than half the 547000 irrigable acres in the 572000-acre Westlands The farmers planted 97 per cent of the acreage last year but are planning to cut that to 74 per cent this year to make better use of whatever water is available The district already knows it will get no more than 25 per cent of its contracted allocation from the US Bureau of Reclamation and Brody contends only enough to meet 19 per cent of the production needs Although the surface supply through the federal project was supposed to supplement underground pumping some farmers over the years have been able to abandon their wells because they had ample water for their crops That's all changed this year There is a waiting list for well drillers and power transformers to get the water out of the ground To get the 191 per cent increase over last year's underground water usage in Westlands the 107 operators responding have laid out 877 milium for new and rehabilitated wells in addition to mine than $7 million for tailwater return systems sprinkler and drip irrigation systems and other water management facilities the survey respondents invested in the past few years Brody says farm dollars are believed to turn over at least six times going through the economy That means the estimated 84 million decline in gross revenue could mean a 1ms exceeding a half-billion dollars to the local state and national economy Brody uid the survey revealed 28 per cent of the employes about 1200 persons won't be working this year which will take about IS million in wages out of the economy More than 84 million in equipment orders were canceled by the respondents Brody said and 8750000 worth of leases for
