No one was exposed to radiation and none was released into the air at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant, the world's largest nuclear power station, according to plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co.

Operators at the plant began shutting down the No. 1 reactor Friday after a rise in radiation triggered an alarm at 2:04 p.m., the power company said in a statement. Radiation 270 times higher than normal was detected in steam that drives the reactor's turbine, Kyodo News service said. Tokyo Electric said it did not know the cause of the radiation increase. The company had feared a nuclear fuel leak could occur, but no increase in radiation was detected in the turbine's exhaust gas outside the plant.
