IKmiu ta t'hl Tiibun A small but appreciative audience gathered Iba Centenary Church, on Wct Monroe treet, laat evening, lUten a lecture by Mr. Frank Jervl. a well-known local Journal Ut, entitled "Col. In all his writings the speaker traced the thought of some writer of the past, and, said he, "He never makes an etiiirram or advances an idea but that a still. hunt among the works of these old writers on kindred subjects will discover its progenitor." Dean Swift's aphorism "that the less a bottle baa in It, the more of a row it makes In txiuring out," would aptly apply to lugeraoll. and yet he had the adamantine check to assert that any man who did not do bis own thinking was a slave. He concluded by saying that the church was in no danger of disruption from Inger- soll's efforts to overthrow it, and that such a religion as be advocated could never obtain a foothold among people ho believed In the purity of home and a future existence beyond the grave.

The MiwMinrl Tornado. Professor Tice, immediately after the great storm In that stale, last Sunday, set out for the scene of destruction, and iu a dispatch, gives the following account of the storm, which was a very peculiar one: Everywhere along the track of the tornado there is evidence of a wave of water flowing iu the rear In the cloud spouts. At some others the debris is carried up aud over ob structions two to three feet high. These waves or currents flowed In greatest volume uphill. There are pluces where the entire topsoil Is washed away by the currents.

Fib rous roots and tufts of gross show their direction to have been uphill, and what la slgnlll- caut, from all points of the compass towards the top of the hill where the tornado was raging at the time, aud expending its force, no trace at any point can be found where they itowea uowu inn. Jinny level places are swept clear of soil. Leaves of grass aud debris of wrecked buildings, fragments of plunks carried along by the current and left In Us track arranged themselves longitudin ally to the current. The following interest ing fact is vouched for by tleorge Gilbert, of this place: He and his wife and four children were on a visit eight miles In the country, and the centre of the tornado passed within nve or six yurus from where tney were; a wove of water, apparently fifteen feet high, rolled up in the rear of the point of contact of the cloud spout with the earth. It rolled over them in a second, and was Icy cold, drenching them thoroughly.

About two miles northeast from town stones weighing live to seven hundred pounds were lifted out os the earth and carried along some distance in the track of the tornado, Hon. J. li. Williams, paesiding justice of the county court, residing In Panther Creek valley, tells me that a stone fell in the centre of a field belonging to II. Kose, estimated to weigh two tons, ills not known whence It came.

1 he tornado, so far as known, commenced iu Arkansas, iu Stone county. It was very severe iu the Crow Creek settlement, where ten personf were killed. On, Flat Creek six were killed. ALL SORTS. Bui my Spring, where art thou? Congress is down on Downey's poetry.

The Pastaokath quite recently has pub-llahed number of very wife and sensible Itoriala from leading papers touching the In business, und has aliso editoriully called attention frequently to the danger before the American people of being led astray into undue and dangerous speculation by the apparent general prosperity of the nation. The following from the Springfield Republican is written In the sume vein, and we think Is a very sensible and timely statement: "The business boom continues to bow signs of its steady ebb to a healthy level. Kailroud business is per. ceptibly slackening, perhaps to revive, but at present the predictions are the other way. From' Chicago, in spite of a reduction in freight rates, the shipments of grain and provisions eastward over the trunk lines have fallen week by week, till during the last month the reduction has been from 79,000 to Si.OliO tons.

A part of this Is due to the beginning of lake navigation, but there is a slackness in shipments from all diree- tions which promises light business through the summer. Meanwhile as prices full exports quicken and the grain ''in sight," on the open market that is, is slowly receding to a normul amount, instead of being half again as large as a year ago. Prices in England are also failing, and while conflicting reports about the grain crop of lHiO make prediction useless, the present signs point to lower rates for grain during the coming year, Currency is coming back to New York as use for it ceases away from' the great centers, and It muBt be gravely questioned whether the sellers and storekeepers in small jihtees have bad a demand at all proportionate to the rise In current articles of daily use. The boom was biggest in the big places, and the smaller ones, after all, In the long run determine the average level of retail prices. The king is served by the lield, and the merchant prince and the railroad baron as well.

Manufacturers who stocked up with raw material under the excitement of the boom or who raised the rate of wages may have to turn some sharp corners id the next six months, and the present tendency of prices and products emphasizes the moral preached in these columns two months ago, that there must be a spirit of mutual accommodation between employer and employed in all manufacturing centers, a wholesome give and take, a cheerful readi. ness on the part of the laborer to wuit for higher wages till good sules have assured good times, and a ready good-will in the man-ufacturer to share his good times with the men who make his success in life possible as soon as cashed sales turn his profits into money." All There in Swearing. N. Y. Sun.

It is plain, therefore, that swearing generally Is only a habit into which men fall, and that it by no means indicates that they are protane in ineir mouguis or disposed to arrogate to themselves the Divine function of passing eternal judgment on their fellows. 1 te exclamations expressive oi wontter or delight or Indignation which omen so freely use, and Iiicn serve the purposes of a safety. valve for their feelings, and the darns and golly of the boys are, in their essence, about the same. Of course it Is foolish to use them, and their employment is In bad taste Tney do not girenginen ine spcecn, lor luey have lost any real meaning; their free and careless use has destroyed the force they may once nave bad. If men always had at their tongue's ends the tit words to express their Ideas and feelings, they probably would not wear so much.
