Tbe batik building stands on the corner of two streets and the drug bas two entrances one to the of the bank building and one the north, it being an shaped sltre. In the corner of the Is located the telephone office where the fire originated.

It Is supposed that lightning struck the telephone wires and carried the fire Into the itore as the flames were first Discovered in the telephone booth- Just to the north of the burned building is a store owned by Frauk Kane of this city, and it was feared that tbis slore was burned, but such was not the case. The furniture of Dentist T. D. Kelly, formerly of Iowa Cily, whose office was over the drug store, was badly damaged, the low being covered by insurance. The telephone office was completely destroyed and will be replaced at once.

The following special was received from K. R. Doty of the Oxford Leader at one o'clock today: Oxford, Iowa, Aug. Special. The drug store of Robin BOB Doly was badly damaged by fire early tbis morning, the flames breaking out between 3 and 4 o'clock.

The fire started in the telephone box from lightning which had been in cetsant all night long. Doctor Doty die- covered the fire williin a very few minutes after it brake out else tlie whole block might have been destroyed. The fire boys responded very quickly to the alarm and had two streams of water play- Ing on the flames, -aud in a few minutes subdued them very quickly. Tlie room was hot as a furnace during ilie fire, aud the damage lo stock from fire, smoke and water will be probably 12500, Tlie damage lo the building is (Soo or a (1000. Both losses ate covered with insurance.

Tbe owners and the whole community are very grateful to the fire boys for their work. Mr. P. R. Ford cashier of the Farmers' Savings bank, is in Ihe city today, and states that Dr.

Doty who slept in an joining building, was by the breaking of bottles aud wire iu the store, and rushing to the found the building in flames. All of the carriers have supplied themselves with good driving teams and will be able to do their daily work quickly. They started out this morning with an extraordinarily large mail many of the patrons not having secured any mail since last Saturday. While there were many letters iti the big sacks each carrier has been supplied with, yet the larger part of the load consisted of paper mail. Many of the farmers along the routes have since the deliveries were established, subscribed for daily newspapers, and from now on will keep in close touch with the outside world.

Many have added the DAILY PRESS to their list of 1 an niany have taken a Chicago paper. Each patron is furnished a daily weather re-v port by the government and this will insure each family teing called on daily by the carrier.
