The Index -journal 11 Tuesday December 29, 1981 N.C. ed ges Razorbacks in a fosfsv Gator Bowl JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) Shrouded in obscurity by a dense fog and a potent North Carolina offense in the second half, Arkansas appeared ready to hand the llth-ranked Tar Heels an easy Gator Bowl victory. But the Razorbacks, led by eternal optimist Lou Holtz, staged a fourfo-quaitowmebackandforcedtheto come up with the key plays in a 31-17 "I'm sure a lot of people thought the game was "over early in the fourth quarter, but I never felt that way," Holtz said. "We managed to recover an onside kick and then got a lift from a couple of big pass plays." Junior tailback Kelvin Bryant rushed for 148 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown, while freshman Ethan Horton, switched from quarterback to tailback when Bryant and backup Tyrone Anthony were hurt in mid-season, ran for lttyards and two scores on 27 carries.

Carolina ran up a 31-10 lead with 7:29 left, enough to have sent some of the Razorback faithful out into a night so thick with fog that the public address announcer suggested that the officials should switch from whistles to foghorns. But with the aid of penalties and passes by freshman quarterback Brad Taylor, Arkansas marched back down the field and scored with 5:03 remaining on a 1-yard run by Jessie Clark. A two-point conversion pass closed the deficit to 31-18. BruceLahay'sonsidekickwasrecoveredbyEdJacksonandthe through the air," Elkins said. "I didn't put too much on my throw at all and it was taking off." The fog also played havoc with ABC-TV's national telecast.

Starting in the second half, viewers saw more field level and end zone shots due to the height of the press box camera angles and the worsening conditions. North Carolina finished its season at 10-2 and also took its third consecutive bowl victory, a first in Atlantic Coast Conference history. The Tar Heels are also 3-1 in Gator Bowl play. Arkansas closed at 8-4. Mauer's sore arm doesn't change Nebraska's plans MIAMI (AP) Quarterback Mark Mauer's sore shoulder seems to be healing in the Florida warmth, but Nebraska's game plan shouldn't change much even if he has to play hurt in the Orange Bowl football game New Year's night, says Coach Tom Osborne.

The Cornhuskers, ranked No. 4. will take on top-ranked Clemson in the Orange Bowl here Friday night. "I don't think we'd change very much if he's not 100 percent. It's a little uncertain right now how well hell be able to throw, but I Eimder professor xaim value of weight tymmtig Razorbacks parlayed the strategy into a 7-yard scoring pass from Taylor to Darryl Mason with 2:44 remaining.

Suddenly, the rout was contest at 31-25. "I was a little nervous," Bryant said, fearing that his game-high performance would come in a losing effort. "I'm just glad the defense came through in the clutch." North Carolina took the ensuing kickoff at its own 5. After being pinned in by the Razorbacks, punter Jeff Hayes elected to run out of the end zone for the safety instead of yielding ground for a last-gasp Arkansas attack. After Gary Anderson returned Hayes' free kick 29 yards to the Tar Heel 49, North Carolina's defense did its job.

The key play was a sack by seldom-used Ronnie Snipes, a freshman nose guard who had been in on several plays earlier. "The center tried to pick me up," Snipes said of his pass rush which sent Taylor reeling for a 17-yard loss. "But it was a little too late by the time he got to me." Neither Holtz, who is now 2-3 against North Carolina, nor Tar Heel Coach Dick Crum, now 5-0 in post-season play, would blame the fog for offensive or defensive problems. "The fog was on both sides of the field," Holtz said, "though I think it's easier to hand off in the fog than pass in it. But we have no excuses." Elkins basically agreed about the problems with passing in high humidity and low visibility.

"It made the ball a little wet. It was easy to grip but it just flew Bart Starr rehired, but still under the gun GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) The Green Bay Packers' hierarchy, weary of long unfinished rebuilding programs, has given Coach Bart Starr an unmistakable win-or-else mandate along with a new two-year contract. Robert J. Parins, the National Football League club's chief executive officer, said Monday that he and the executive committee's six other members "believe that reasonable success is foreseeable with our present head coach, and probably an addition to the staff." But Parins also said Starr's seven-year coaching record (39-65-2), including a season-ending 28-3 thrashing Dec.

20 by the New York Jets that cost the Packers an NFL playoff berth, weighed as heavily in the decision as did the team's second-half turnabout of six victories in its last eight games. The decisions on the rehiring and contract length essentially were those of Parins, who was elected chief executive officer by the club's 44-member Board of Directors Oct 11. Although he said the contract does not contain an escape clause, Parins said Starr may not be asked to return for the second year of the pact unless the Packers do well in the 1982 season. Minnesota mauls Army JsMrxbaball 4 think he'll be ready." said Osborne. "We're going to play the game the same way.

If it's third down and eight to go, then it's a passing down and we'll probably throw. "Of course we'd like to be able to run against them. Nobody wants to play football under conditions where they are forced to pass." added Osborne. Osborne, whose team lost two of its first three games and then closed out the regular season with eight straight victories, said Mauer threw for about 30 minutes in practice Monday and the More and more people are becoming aware of their physical appearance, and they are realizing that they not only need to lose pounds but they also need to tone up their muscles. That team was the Minnesota Gophers, who marched all over Army 79-37 in the opening round of Pillsbury Classic Monday night.

The ninth-ranked Gophers' victory was the most impressive on a busy night of college basketball festivals, classics and holiday tournaments. "Going in, we felt we may have the best 10 players on the floor, not one or two best," said Minnesota Coach Jim Dutcher. "It is hard to fool guys when you are so much bigger and faster." Army Coach Pete Gaudet wasn't that impressed with the Gophers for the first 10 minutes at least. "We did what we wanted to do. If we had continued to play our game, we could have made it respectable," he said, referring to the small 21-15 lead host Minnesota held at that point.

Then the Gopher reserves went on a 14-2 tear and Minnesota was ready for the finals, againt Arizona. "It was without question our best defensive game," added Dutcher. Gary Holmes paced S-l Minnesota with 17 moved into the championship game with a 64-59 decision over Montana State. Basketball rankings Dr. Joe Chandler, associate professor of health, physical education and recreation, checks out HPER major Clinton Cobb's performance on the shoulder press.

The shoulder press is designed to develop the shoulder and upper arm muscles. Both men and women are utilizing Lander's weight room in an effort to stay in shape. Chandler advises those starting a weight training program that weight training should be done in conjunction with an exercise program that promotes cardiovascular fitness. weight training oecause ot tne belief that working with weights is for "muscle men" only. Weight training is the type of progressive resistance exercise, which Chandler says is appropriate for the average personmale or female.

The main goal of weight training, he explains, is the enhancement of total body health by increasiins muscle tone, endurance, ana strength. The physical work required to bring about health benefits through weight training is more strenuous than most Americans are accustomed to enduring. But it is not nearly as physically demanding as many of the "muscle men" magazines describe. Lander College opened a weight training room and began Its weight training program in the spring of 1981, under the su-pervisiion of Dr. Chandler.

The majority of people using the Lander weight room consult Chandler or one of his assistants before beginning their weight 'training. Chandler emphasized that the programs "art designed to fit an Individual's needs and desires." At Lander, programs are generally designed to increase muscle tone and endurance, with muscle hypertrophy (enlargement of muscles) given consideratioa as necessary. "Of course, some muscle enlargement will occur la any good weight training program, states Chandler. rTbe rate and amount of increase involves many factors." Chandler is quick to admit that misconceptions surrounding weight training are rampant especially where women are concerned. Many people believe that women will develop large, bulky muscles similar to those of men if they lift weights.

Chandler dispell thii myth by explaining that male muscle development is dependent to a great extent on the level of testosterone (male or sex nor- arm appeared to be responding to treatment. "He didn't throw very hard, but the rest and warm weather seemed to help," said Osborne, who held Mauer out of passing drills after his shoulder became sore during Nebraska's first Miami practice last Thursday. Mauer started the season as the Cornhuskers' No. 1 quarterback but lost his job to Nate Mason after Iowa upset Nebraska 10-7 in the season opener. Mason directed a victory over Florida State, but was injured during the Cornhuskers' loss to Penn State.

Mauer returned to the starting lineup but lost the job a week later to Turner Gill, who held it until he was hurt against Iowa State on Nov. 14. Mauer, who engineered Nebraska's season-ending triumph over Oklahoma, has completed 34 of 68 passes for 428 yards and five touchdowns in the Cornhuskers' ground-oriented attack. Mauer, a senior from St. Paul, said he felt the soreness in -his shoulder stemmed from the fourth-ranked Cornhuskers' two weeks of practice in sub-freezing weather in Lincoln.

Neb. "The arm felt good today. It got sore near the end of the workout. I think I got a little tired, but it should be fine." said Mauer. "P.acticing in cold weather could be part of the problem.

These warm temperatures have got to help." Mauer agreed with Osborne's contention that the Nebraska game plan won't be altered much by the condition of his throwing arm. "Our philosophy is to go with what 's working best" said Mauer. "If we're running well and that's what's putting points on the board, that's what we stay with." Mauer added. "If we need to throw, then we throw. We try to take advantage of what we're doing best." Does he have a preference? "No," quipped Mauer.

"I'm all for doing what it takes to Clemson plans heftier 'package for Nebraska MIAMI (AP) What would an Orange Bowl mean win for Clemson? Such a victory would give the top-ranked Tigers their first national football championship, but Coach Danny Ford refuses to say whether such it would establish his team as the best in the country. "If we go out and beat Nebraska, it will prove that we went out there 12 weeks and nobody beat us," said Ford, whose 11-0 Tigers will collide with Tom Osborne's 9-2 Cornhuskers Friday night. "I can't say if we would be the best team in the country. Who is best able to judge that, sportswriter or coaches? I don't know." On Monday, Ford said the Tigers have progressed steadily in practice since arriving in Miami Christmas Day after six days of workouts in New Symrna Beach, Fla. He said the Clemson game plan for the fourth-ranked Cornhuskers will be a heftier "package" than the Tigers have unveiled for any of its games, but declined to give any hints about what's been added.

We've had more time to work on things you wouldn't have time for during the season." said Ford. Ford said it would be difficult to point out any particular area of the Nebraska offense or defense that the Tigers are wary of. "It depends on which side of the line you're on." he said. "If you're our defensive coach, you'd say their offensive is excellent. The kicking coach would say the kicking game is outstanding If you're on offense, then the defense is good." said Ford.

that good health Is dependent on an exercise program that promotes cardiovascular fitness and that weight training for muscle enhancement should be a supplement to the cardiovascular training. Chandler contends that weight training is mandatory for. athletes because the increase in muscular strength can help improve their performance ana aid in the prevention of injuries, be also recommends it for average students if they understand the benefits of weight training, know what it does and does not accomplish snd know how to do it properly. The Lander weight room is open to all Lander students, faculty, and alumni with appropriate ID; Sundays through Thursdays, p.m. subjects were fed a protein deficient diet" Since weight training does not develop the cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels) to any great extent, Chandler recommends areobic activities such as walking, jogging, ng, or swimming to enhance the cardiovascular system.

These activities are the mainstay of a physical fitness program while weight lifting should be regarded as an extra activity. If a middle-aged adult free of high blood pressure, heart problems, or other obvious health problems, would like to begin a weight training program. Chandler suggests that be or she seek accurate information, work with light weights, and not forget to include plenty of stretching exercises to maintain flexibility. Chandler constantly stresses mone) present, and that women generally do not have high enough lvels of testosterone to develop large bulky muscles. But women, according to Chandler, are able to develop, through weight training, muscle tone, endurance, and strength to an amazing degree.

Another misconception about weight training is that It is necessary to overload one's diet with protein if one is to increase muscle size. Chandler assures those participatiing in a weight training that an increase in protein intake is unnecessary unless i protein deficiency already exists. "Protein deficiencies in the United States are almost nonexistent," he added.
