A Spotlight Santa Cruz Sentinel Friday, May 9, 1986 screen. Don't expect much from "Critters" and you might find yourself pleasantly surprised. No big deal, but some nice chuckles. one of the film's "stars" has a recognizable name Dee Wallace Stone from "Cujo" and a host of other horror productions but everyone seems right at home on the to cut in on their action and throw him out a window. Throughout the movie the critters shoot abrupt obscenities back and forth at one another and do cute, if gross, little things like roll their eyes after swallowing a cherry bomb.

Much of this movie is crude, and the critters are violent little things so more than a few buckets of ketchup are used in the production. But, director and co-screenwriter, (along with Domonic Muir) Stephen Herekhas a nice sense of the absurd and keeps things moving along. Only A JOURNEY INTO THE REAL EMERALD FOREST 'Critters' gives stupid horror films good name "RAOMI is a sobering, sympathetic, technically expert film on the complex issues surrounding the survival of the indigenous Indian tribes of north central Brazil. Eventually they run into little brother as he's running down the road toward town. He leads them back to the farm which, of course, leads to the end of this 80-minute piece of silliness. Need I mention that although everybody seems to live happily ever after except the critters, the possibility of a sequel is set up in the last seconds? What makes "Critters" fun is its sense of goofiness. When the space bounty hunters first discover how to drive an automobile, they zoom off in reverse as if its the most natural thing in the world. When the local sheriff arrives to help them battle the critters, they figure he's trying FINAL NIGHT TRACY HEPBURN Woman ojjltu Ijua .7.30 SptncwTnqr, KathtriM Hepburn, LucUhBa WITHOUT LOVE 9:30 NIGHTLY AT 6:50, 8:25, 10:00 SUN.

BARGAIN SHOWS 3:05 4:50 SATURDAY ONLY A SPECIAL EVENT NICKELODEON' WHEN year-end lists are made of the most pleasantly stupid horror movies of 1986, "Critters," now playing at the Aptos Twin Theater, is sure to be near the top. This is a film about space porcupines with big mouths who, after escaping from a space prison, come down to earth to find something to munch on. Immediately behind them are a couple of super-tough bounty hunters whose bodies are made of silly putty so that they can transform themselves into other species at will. Right off the bat, these two facts should tell you what kind of film we're talking about here. "Passage to India" it ain't.

Still, it's fun for what it is. The critters land near a friendly little farm in Any-rural-where, USA and start raising havoc in the lives of Mom, Dad, Sis and little brother. Never friendly for a minute, the little puffballs immediately chomp down on and devour Sis' boyfriend (it's OK, he was from New York and had an earring), a cop, a cow, and lots of chickens. They also sink their teeth into Dad in one or two places, but he manages to escape. 426-7500 Lincoln Cedar Gregg Schiffner AN EVENING OF FILMS AND ENTERTAINMENT ONCE AT 8:00 Filmmaker In person SUNDAY ONLY fHA HOtMt MARILYN MONROE Gentlemen fgfik "Blondes 6:00 4 9:10 7:30 NOW PLAYING "ELEGANTLY FUNNY Room with a View' is like a holiday out of time.
