BOBBY NICHOLS Reacts to miss Carroll Proves Point For Reds In Baseball By IMTED PRESS INTERNATIONAL Clay Carroll isn't the sort of fellow who likes to rub it in but, face it, he did rub it in. And so the Cincinnati Reds emerged laughing from their season opening three- game senes with the Los Angeles Dodgers last night when Carroll was the winning pitcher in a 7-6 victory. It was the third straight victory over the Dodgers and reminded the Los Angeles club that the Reds, too, have a star relief, pitcher The Reds contended throughout the winter that Carroll merited comparison with iron man relief ace Mike Marshall of the Dodgers, the National Cy Young Award winner in 1974. 57 appearances and 12-5 record were modest alongside Marshall's 196 appearances and 15-12 mark but the Reds insisted their native of Clanton, was a star, too. The Dodgers likely to argue the point at least today.

Carroll shut out the Dodgers with one hit in the last three innings last night and received credit for the victory when Tony eighth-inning double drove in Pete Rose with the winning run. Carroll appeared in all three games of the series, allowing two hits and no runs in 5-3 innings. Marshall appeared in two games of the series and was the losing pitcher when tagged for two runs in the ninth inning of Wednesday second game. George second homer of the game set the stage for the triumph, tying the score at 6-6. game- winning hit was his first hit of the season and tagged Charlie Hough with the loss.

Bill Buckner had a triple, double and single for the Dodgers. St. Louis defeated Montreal 7-2, Pittsburgh beat Chicago 8-4, Philadelphia shaded the New York Mets 3-2 in 11 innings and San Francisco topped San Diego 2-0 in 10 innings in other NL games. In the American League, Texas defeated Minnesota 5-4, Oakland routed Chicago 9-0 and Baltimore ripped Detroit 10-0. Nicklaus May Be Biding Time AUGUSTA, Ga.

(UP!) The way Jack Nicklaus is playing this Masters, you get the feeling merely biding his time. Lee Elder monopolized the limelight by becoming the first black to play in this tournament and Bobby Nichols quietly grabbed the firstround lead by shooting a 67 in rain. But the man everybody had better start watching is Nicklaus. Favored to win the Masters for an unprecedented fifth time, Nicklaus is just one stroke back and the way he played the opning round he created the feeling he was just coasting. you have 36 putts and shoot a 68 on Augusta National, a good round of said Nicklaus.

I FI Telephotc A's Rookie Pitcher Is Making Jackson Believe O.AKLAND (UPI) Of course, it was only one game and a long season ahead in which almost anything can happen but off Mike major league debut, it going to take long for the Oakland to forget Jim Hunter. the way back to the first day of spring training, all the talked about was loss to the New York Yankees over a contract squabble with owner Charlie Finley. While none would say it straight out, every single one had doubts about the chances of winning a fourth straight world title without Hunter, their bread-and-butter pitcher over the last half dozen seasons. Then, out of nowhere came 20-year-old Norris, a 6-foot-2, 172-pound right-hander from San Francisco, and there was a noticeable change in all the With more than 100 of his relatives and friends looking on he pitched a three- hitter in a 9-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. made a believer out of me.

After all, they have gotten much sleep between last season opener and this Candlestick inaugural. The plan must have been to get last game over as quickly as possible to give the team time to fly back from San Diego to the Bay Area. The way Jim Barr and the Randy Jones were mowing down batters I thought the game would set a National League record for fastest season opener.

It took an extra inning to get the thing over, but after the two 10th inning runs backed up shutout, there was happiness back home in the Bay Area where fans were watching on television. Because of the two nights of rainy postponements the Giant followers were able to see the season opener on television. Then they trundled off to bed to get a good sleep to be ready for the Candlestick opener today. It as easy for the players. They had to shower, dress, motor to the airport and then fly back to' San Francisco.

It had to be the early morning hours before they could crawl underneath the covers. They had to be out of the sack early enough to get in some batting practice before the start of game. So if a player or two is caught nodding between innings today, let it go without comment. WHILE MOST BAY fishermen are grumbling about the lack of salmon. Bob Massad of Mill Valley is grinning from ear to ear.

Last Saturday, fishing seven miles southeast of the Farralon Islands, Massad pulled out a 43-pounder, duly weighed and recorded by Rich Urbais of the Sausalito Boat and Tackle Shop. All 12 anglers on Hal boat, InaBelle, took home a salmon, and in these days of supermarket inflation that bad. MIKE GERARD, 14-year-old Terra Linda Robin Hood who can shoot an apple off head, was second last weekend at the U.S. National Indoor Archery Championships at Harrisburg, Pa. He had tied for first with Richard McKinney, the world target champion, but was given the silver prize because of a complicated formula based on points made at various distances.

But finishing second out of 450 shooters, most of them adults in the open division, is mighty fine. Mike will be trying out for the U.S. world team May 10 and 11 at St. Louis, Mo. BILLY SCOTT of San Bernadino, a newcomer to the big car racing scene, will be driving a entered by Marvin Webster of Mill Valley in tryouts for the Indianapolis 500-mile race scheduled for May 25.

That means Elder and Johnny Miller are border-liners. I have another 75,1 guess be heading for said Miller. Allen Miller got into the Masters by winning last April at Tallahassee, while everyone who had won a tournament the previous 12 months was playing in the Tournament of Champions.
