wOt i Sally Morton Of Cotton Selection Is Saturday Valerie Pinkert medicine major at Merritt College is the candidate representing the bayshore city She was Miss Oakland last year and fourth runnerup in the 1969 Miss California Pagent Southern Finalists Three of the contestants are from San Diego State College They include Judith Barber 18 a freshman from Burbank who Is active in charitable organizations and campus clubs Judith Friend 19 a sophomore majoring in physical education from Newport Beach and named as one of the Best Dressed at SDSC and Patricia Heighton 20 a sophomore majoring in Spanish and speech arts who was Miss San Diqgo in 1968 and 1969 and was first runnerup in the Miss California Pageant Two hopefuls are from the University of Southern California Constance Foster 20 is a junior majoring in speech The Arcadia High School graduate is a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and was a princess in the 1967 Tournament of Roses parade The other USC title seeker is Rita Vermeer 20 a junior education major from Corona i i i i i i i i 3 i a senior English and elementary education major at Fresno State College from Bakersfield She is the Sweetheart of Sigma Chi at FSC and a member of the Little Sigmas Kathleen Carroll a San Joaquin Memorial High School graduate and sophomore physical education major at Fresno State College is one of four 19-year-olds in the contest Miss Carroll teaches swimming and is a lifeguard She is sponsored by Delta Zeta Sally Morton 19 Is sponsored by the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Fresno State College The Fresno High School grad-uate Is a sophomore majoring hi psychology and sociology Merced is represented by Jill Pfitzer 21' a Junior dentistry and home economics major at the University of California at Santa Barbara where she is on the tennis and skiing teams A finalist In last Miss Stanislaus County contest Valerie Pinkert 20 will represent Modesto She is a graduate of Grace Davis High School in Modesto and is a journalism-public relations major at FSC Pamela Sue Roberts 18 a freshman at FSC and a Hoover Laomia McCoy High School of Fresno graduate is another of the eight San Joaquin Valley contestants At 5 feet 94 inches she is the tallest of the 16 finalists Contest Finalists Tulare Maid of Cotton is Linda Stone 18 from Tulare The College of the Sequoias freshman was first runnerup in last year's Miss Tulare contest and was Miss geniality Kings Maui of Cotton is Susan Silva 19 of Lemoore She attends West Hills College in Coalinga where she is secretary of the freshman class Sue Treanor 18 is Fresno State Maid1 of Cotton The freshman business major is a graduate of Miramonte High School at Orinda and is a member of the Delta Gamma sorority at FSC California State Polytechnic College at San Luis Obispo will be represented by Julie Ayers 21 from Auburn The junior home economics major also is a princess for the Auburn District Fair For the first time in the California contest the Port of Oakland is sponsoring an entry Lao-mia McCoy 20 of Oakland and a sophomore mathematics and Judith Barber Dana Barnard Pamela Roberts JBksMftMjfil Susan Silva Junior Membership OMAHA Neb Robert Castro of Fresno is a new junior member of the American Shorthorn Association a nationwide registry for Shorthorn and Polled Shorthorn beef cattle He is now entitled to all member-breeder registration privileges except voting 26-F THE FRESNO BEE Sunday March 15 1971 Kathleen Carroll Stale Maid The 16 finalists in the California Maid of Cotton contest will begin arriving in Fresno Thursday night in preparation for Friday and pageant activities which start with a luncheon fashion show Friday at the Fresno Hacienda Motel Gayle Thornton the National Maid of Cotton and Natalie Black the reigning California Maid of Cotton will be on hand for the two day affair Miss Thornton will serve as an honorary judge at Saturday selection at the Fresno Convention Center Judges for the Cotton Cotillion include Clifford Thompson president Fresno Cotton Exchange Davis vice president Kingsburg Cotton Oil Company Mrs Betty Parker advertising and publicity director for Miss Pat Mrs A Mathews Jr 1958 California Maid of Cotton and Fisher Rhymes western promotion manager National Cotton Council of America Robert Lee president San Francisco Cotton Co will be master of ceremonies San Joaquin Valley contestants include Dana Barnard 22 Patricia Heighten afc.
