mJ Election Post Mortem: Some Revelations By Eli Setendch For all its absurdities Fresno County's bizarre primary election did manage to produce its share of political revelations For one thing there really is a silent majority nearly half the people who could have did not bother to vote Law and in the most political sense of the will continue to be a major issue among voters Political muscle in the form of party and organizational backing apparently is not what it used to be made speeches and claimed a variety of endorsements Villa pulled together a broad band of hard working volunteers and went his own busy way "I attribute it to the fact we just worked very he said did everything we possibly could from publicity to meeting people face-to-face And we did a lot of precinct work Nobody covered as much ground as we did was a very technical type of Understandably for a first-timer in the political arena Villa is by ner City Councilman Camaroda but more than such veteran vote-getters as former Assemblymen Bert DeLotto and Wallace Henderson Supervisor Joseph A Reich and Democratic Party activist Dale Doig For Camaroda who correctly had been considered by most of the competition as the man to beat it was a triumph of advertising and button-holing over the traditional coffee-hour door-knocking tactics employed by the others And while the others plodded through the neighborhoods And at least a couple of power bases for the future were established Of all propably the most refreshing aspect of the election was the emergence of a new name in local that of A1 Villa a young energetic attorney whose aggressive grassroots campangn carried him to a surprising second place finish in the eight candidate campaign for the Democratic nomination in the 32nd Assembly District Villa finished with 4280 votes nearly 2700 fewer than the win his showing of my people felt we lost We look upon it as a victory definitely be around" On the Republican side of the 32nd District race the winner attorney Kenneth Maddy ran on his record pointing to his involvement in civic affairs In winning he turned back a candidate who had the support of virtually all of the Republican party structure John Hix had the endorsements He had the help and money of oldtime GOP professionals He had a polished well-oiled campaign He was the only candidate for instance who paid such attention to detail that he checked on absentee ballot requests and followed up by sending campaign material to the voters asking for ballots But none of it worked Even the absentee voters failed him Before they were counted Hix conectly predicted that if he did not win the absentee vote the election was lost Compare that with the noncampaign of attorney William A Smith who had removed himself as a candidate for district attorney but too late to have his name dropped from the bail Though defeated 31468 to 22-63 by Dist Atty William Daly Smith picked up nearly 31 per cent of the votes cast expected 10 per 13 per cent at the he said course very flattered and very encouraged for the future think if stayed in the race I probably could have Smith declined to speculate why he made such a good showing saying one long sleepless night Between cups of coffee an occasional cigar and little sleep McCluskey worked in 24-hour stretches feverishly trying to program Fresno $1 million computer to tabulate Tuesday's primary election ballots No one was more relieved Saturday than McCluskey when the computer churned out the final results at 9:35 pm But his celebration was rather modest He drank two beers and went to sleep McCluskey talked this morning about what went on in the computer room but deferred any questions about actual procedures until after he testifies Wednesday before an Assembly committee looking Into the vote counting snafu The 25-year-old programmer with long red hair and matching beard has worked on some elections before but none as complex as this been in positions most of the time where I was he said finally was in charge and I guess I got in a little From May 30 (Saturday) when the trouble was first spotted until last Saturday when the results were in McCluskey figures he got about 30 hours sleep was numb most of the said the easy-going McCluskey To some working 24 straight hours is impossible but to McCluskey just part of the job As long as there were problems I had to work them out He said he can work 16 hours and be fully alert but after that his effectiveness slips worked long hours like this he commented it was nothing requiring this much Smiles come easily for him but most of last week his intensity to get the job finished masked any kind of humor was my program I was the only one who could solve it and I figured it was my responsibility to finish it I can tell you though I wanted to be any place but The only time he got nervous he said was Friday when the with his mother a semi-invalid his grandmother who spends much of her time at work and his grandfather whose age and ill health prevent his acting as a companion to a lively boy His' circumstances are much like those of all of the brothers" in the Big Brother program They are toys growing up without the advantage of an adult male in the home A Big Brother helps to fill the void He becomes the one person to whom a boy can confide his troubles and ambitions and from whom he can get answers to bothersome questions a boy hates to ask his mother A Big Brother just by being himself and including a Little Brother in some parts of his normal routine plus planning a few special activities now and then becomes an image of what being a man is all about Although many of the Little Brothers are much like Eric some are in even greater need of a Big Brother Some at even a very young age already have been in trouble others come from homes much less stable See Brothers Page 9-B Bm Phot ALL SMILES Computer programmer James McCluskey smiles with relief after ballot results
