Here's How » « • Used Furnishings May Need Work By VIVIAN BROWN AP Ncwsfeatures Writer Many people begin house additions in late summer and fall, so that after the shell has been put up, the do- it-yourselfer can work indoors during winter months. As costs of the project mount, the amateur handyman is likely to resort to used materials in doing his new wing or house remodeling job. We are a generation of traders. Some people are so dedicated to the trade, exchange, used-merchandise routine that they dislike buying anything new. This can apply to front doors or washing machines. "We can afford it because we can get it cheap," is what many women tell their husbands. PTA swap sales, consignment and thrift shops have made the idea fashionable. Doors, windows, screens and washing machines available at Joe's Junk Yard may be dirt cheap, but it won't help your project if the articles look it. Joe may be no mechanic, so any gizmo that is powered is a particularly risky purchase, unless there is an expert repairman in the family. The question to ask about used objects is: Will they be an asset to the appearance of the house? The amateur tires easily as hard work levels initial enthusiasm and increases anxiety to see results of his handiwork. He can seldom be a perfectionist throughout a lengthy project. And used materials often must be refinished, repainted, replaned, reshaped or what have you. Seldom a Bargain Shutters bought used are seldom a bargain unless you do an excellent refinishing job. They are usually paint-blistered or cracked. It won't do to put a coat of paint on them and slap them up on the house. A good job of scraping and refinishing is important to the finished appearance of the shutters. Second-hand windows can offer problems as one do-it-yourselfer found. He bought used double- hung windows at bargain prices and then found that the opening Dallas Cityati Buys Business DALLAS CITY - Glenn Poulter of the Dallas City Florist, has announced the purchase of Holt's Garden Center in Carthage from Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Barker. Poulter said the acquisition of the new business would enable them to offer a wider variety of merchandise and improve the service at both stores. for the previous siding sash windows didn't have counterweights. He had to buy fittings so they could be adjusted, and in the long run his project suffered from thh tedious extra task and expense. Modern screens, used or new, seldom fit the windows of an old house. It is best to be equipped with extra measurements when these are purchased, as normally they must be custom-built. A frame can be shaved or extended with new wood, but what a mess if one doesn't plane carefully. Screens must fit exactly to serve their purpose. Ditto storm windows. Doors are the biggest problem for amateurs to fit, and used doors an even bigger problem. Many people do prefer the handsome doors of the past, rather than modern styles. If you can acquire a door with character, don't pass it up. But if you've never tackled a door hanging job before, hire a professional. There are many good used articles in junk lots and in warehouses for knowledgeable people who know how to get their value. But amateurs should avoid getting involved. Common Mart Peace Offers Insufficient NEW YORK (AP) - Haggling over chickens and wine is only a small part of the battle between the United States and the European Common Market. While the odor of compromise is in the air, the conflict involving money and products is far from settled yet. The United States is angry because the Common Market has raised the tariff on American chickens and all but cut off a profitable market. Peace gestures by the Europeans — France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, work out a common policy on for- year is far from balanced). Thai builds up surplus dollars abroad which could be turned into the U.S. Treasury for more of its gold, already subject to disturbing shrinkage. Some European countries, although they like to get the dollars, are worried because the American investment money could mean Yankee control of their industries. France, for one, is moving to regulate the flow of outside capital by requiring prior notice oi any intention by Americans or others to buy into French companies, except in the normal operations of the French stock exchange where the influx can be watched. The target is private deals which have been fairly common. France is urging the other nations in the Common Market to Luxembourg — are tonncd too small to make much difference. So the United States this week is exploring countcrmcasures, such as raising the tariff on European wines and photographic film, among other things. Also worrying both sides of the Atlantic is the big outflow this year of American investment money. But the two sides take highly different views of alarm. The United States is worried because the outflow of American dollars increases the deficit in the balance of payments (which this eign investment. Dollars are welcome as long as they aid economic growth in general. They are suspect if they seem to foreshadow American control of particular industries. READ THE WANT ADS!
