fln MOISTED 6, 1977 C5 Hoover Tools Powerful Rustler Baseball Team Flying Parson Gil Dodds Buried Today Golden West 1977 baseball roster reads like a listing of Southern California Conference all stars. Entering his 11th year as Rustler head coach, Fred Hoover has assembled one of the most formidable teams in Golden West history, boasting eight players who made one of the conference all-star squads last year. The veterans are: first baseman Larry Kubacki, second baseman Doug Mansolino. third baseman Mike Selwood, outfielders Jim Bruneaux and Vince Bienek, designated hitter Scott Desrosier, plus two Cypress College transfers, catcher Dave Huppert and outfielder Jeff Evans. Golden West also has three other sophomores back, shortstop Jerry Velasquez and pitchers Brian Costelloe and Daryl Paine.

should be pretty Hoover said. this point we have any real weak points other than the inexperience of our pitchers. Our freshmen pitchers have done an adequate job this winter considering scrimmaged mostly four-year schools. The two sophomores. Costelloe and Paine, will be the mainstays of the pitching staff.

Costelloe fought off a bout of mononucleosis this winter and is just rounding into shape. He saw limited duty last spring, but he has excellent control and keeps the ball low. Paine was the top freshman pitcher in 1976, posting a 3-1 record. Hoover has been especially pleased with the work of two freshmen. Chuck Robertson (Fountain Valley) and Peter White (Newport Harbor).

Other freshmen mound hopefuls are Steve Natsuhara (Bolsa Grande). Tom Schlepp (Cypress), Chuck Leidenheimer (La Quinta) and Mike Pantuso (Newport Harbor). All the pitchers need to do is keep the Rustlers close. There is an abundance of run-scoring potential throughout a lineup that features speed, bat control, and power. have better team speed than ever Hoover said.

Leonard said he failed to follow up an advantage in the fourth round because he didn't want to take any chances in his first pro fight. The Rustlers will start an sophomore infield if Velasquez can fight off a strong challenge from freshman Ken Munger (Kennedy) at shortstop. Kubacki, a .324 hitter last year, will open at first base and Selwood, a recent draft choice of the Chicago White Sox, will man third base.

Mansolino will anchor the infield at second base. The sophomore hit a phenomenal .432 last year and was a first- team, all-Southern California and a second-team, all-state selection.
