You just play them for the pass he says. More use of a four-man rush with seven players dropping off the line into zone coverage also played a part in the record. The Cornhuskers put a fifth back, John Decker, in the lineup and removed an end. key to playing a zone defense is knowing where supposed to be and being able to read the says Powers, who was schooled in defensive backfield play during his six-year stint with the Oakland Raiders. Perhaps the most vital role is played by the safety.

And, as his statistics show, Kosch is emerging as an exceptional deep defender. Zone for Dickey safety really has to read the pattern and the says Powers. can be a big help or a zero for The Cornhuskers used both man-to-man and zone coverage Saturday, but some 80 per cent of the time they utilized a zone. The defender has the burden of covering the area and reading the receiver and quarterback in order to get to the right place at the right time. As Kosch noted after the game we had it to do again, we do it Dickey, the Big all-time passing leader, would be the first to agree.

Anybody who puts the ball into the air over 40 times a game, as done on many occasions, is bound to throw some interceptions. Eight of the 14 teams finished with winning records, one was at .500 and two more were just a shade under 50-50. Seven clubs scored more than 200 points in eight to 10-game schedules. Concordia players shattered records in numerous departments in putting together the best season among all teams under rookie coach John Seevers.

The Bulldogs went 8-1 to win the NIAC crown and finished second in the Tri-State. Wayne captured the NCC title after blanking Kearney, 24-0. The Wildcats, however, were upset in their finale Saturday at Hiram Scott, 14-7. The Scotts completed the finest campaign in their five-year history at 6-2-1 in the process. Neither junior college team played above .500, however, both met rugged opposition.

McCook won the head-to-head duel between the two, 19-0. Concordia and Kearney each scored 286 points, but the Bulldogs played one less game to top the offense. Wayne allowed the fewest number of points, 81 in nine games. In a call to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert M. Finn, Saturday night the 20-year-old junior said the team physician ruled against bis making the trip. Finn said it was his third near-brush with death.

He said the youth was injured when his car flipped over in an accident several years ago and was riding in a car while attending McCook Junior in Nebraska last June when the driver was killed in an accident. He was captain of the McCook team and was named to the All-America Junior College team before transferring to Marshall. Finn said an opeation for damaged ligaments in the left knee and a recent injury prevented him from making the trip for game. Two kickers drew notice. Kevin Hunt at Doane booted a 52-yard field goal and Greg Cheng a 51- yarder, both school records. Major injuries to key players were rare. However, some teams lost top personnel for short periods. The most unfortunate loss was at Doane where running back Mike Sallier failed to tie Tank career NAIA touchdown mark of 60 by missing the last two games with a leg ailment.
