use the words however He refers to his condition as a congenital birth defect Military Service The status of fallen arches became an issue when his critics contrasted his calls for a get-tough policy against current draft resisters with his actions to avoid military service during World War II He then first sought an occupation deferment as a school teacher He was ordered to report for induction however after his appeal was denied But that the Army rejected him anyway because of flat feet He was reminded of all this again when he made a Sacra' mento Valley campaign swing this week Sign carriers greeted him in Chico Red Bluff and Redding with sarcastic references to his flat feet and welcomed him as a draft But at his rallies Rafferty himself brought up the matter edging into it while warning his fellow Republicans against stooping to smear tactics of overheating a violence-laden atmosphere an action which he charges the Democrats are doing Physical Handicap Rafferty cites as one of several such examples the attacks on him because of his birth Sometimes he refers to it as his He contrasts his condition with that of his opponent Democratic nominee Alan Cranston whom he describes as fine He then accuses Cranston of trying to deride physical condition by planning to send to Hong Kong for toy canes to be distributed during the campaign Such a campaign policy would be
