Desperadoes Evans Sontag Found Nemesis In Rails Revenge THE FRESNO BEE 7-A Sunday July 28 1968 that his days were numbered Evans died in 1917 one year after his parole George Sontag and Edward Morrell the man who helped Evans escape from the Fresno jail served their prison terms and when they were free became reformers expounding to those who would listen on the evils that befall him who disregards the laws of the land They ordered him to prepare breakfast for them while they kept him and the trail under surveillance The Englishman was highly excitable but the admonishments from the fugitives put him to work While they were eating the outlaws spotted an approaching posse led by the Indian trackers Evans and Sontag ordered the Englishman to pick up a water pall and walk nonchalantly towards a spring 200 yards away as though a bucket of water was the only thought in his mind They started him on his way with the threat of a shot in the back if he ran or in any way alerted the posse to the fact that something was amiss in the cabin was wounded The outlaws hid behind a haystack and a furious shootout ensued Before it was over Sontag was mortally wounded and Evans lost an eye and would lose his arm because of shattered bone Crawls Into Brush Evans crawled into the brush and when the posse stormed the haystack they found only Sontag who was unconscious from loss of blood Evans was captured later in the home of a member of his wife's family When the officers got to him he was raging with fever and delirium caused by his wounds By the time Evans trial began in Fresno November 20 1893 Sontag had died of his wounds By a ruse an accomplice helped Evans their mandate The hunted men managed to survive through the long cold winter of 1892-93 They hid out in the snow-covered hills where according to rumors they were befriended by a friendly rancher At Christmas they managed to slip into Visalia and visit for several days with the Evans family The beginning of the demise began near a landmark known as the Stone Corral A posse headed by US Marshal George Gard was stationed in a nearby cabin This time the posse was inside and the outlaws outside When Sontag and Evans came walking down the hill towards the cabin one of the officers became excited and fired too quickly Evans The posse was within 10 feet of flia cabin when Evans opened the door and with a blast from his shotgun killed Vernon Wilson a US deputy marshal leading the posse Andy McGinnis a deputy sheriff from Modesto was also killed before the firing ceased and Evans and Sontag were once more on their way Apaches Go Homo Futile sporadic attempts to catch the outlaws continued The Apaches turned against the effort and went home to Arizona Other bounty hunters eager to collect the blood money that was now being offered for the capture of the fugitives joined the duly appointed officers of the law who were trying to carry out FREEJFILM1 OMCDlMtf Black tWhitig cmm escape from the Fresno County jail and he remained at large for some time However he was lured home by a lying friend on the pretext that his child was ill and thus was recaptured Talk of lynching resounded in Visalia and Evans was moved from the town He was sentenced to Folsom for life by Judge Harris of Fresno After 17 years of imprisonment under the administration of Hiram Johnson in 1916 he was paroled For a time he lived on a poor farm in Oregon but was moved to a Portland Ore hospital by his son when it became apparent -L-err Your Dollars Go Further at Sears -1 Sleek Contemporary Living Room Sofa mph Hsmr' wFf I and stock and Evans became despondent At about this time a train was held up at Ceres and Evans again came under suspicion A little later Evans returned to Visalia Evans then met a man by the name of John Sontag Son-tag had worked for the railroad and while he was serving as a brakeman at Fresno his foot bad been crushed Doctors at the hospital whom he believed favored the railroad had discharged him while he was still unfit for work In his absence his job had been given to another and he was unable to get other duties His emotions were bitterly inflammatory towards the railroad Soon John Sontag his brother George and Chris Evans were under surveillance by Will Smith a railway detective The day came when George Sontag was taken to the sheriff's office for interrogation In the meantime Smith and a deputy sheriff named Witty went to the Evans home Sontag Was Waiting As they approached they saw John Sontag enter They were met at the door by Eva Evans the 16-year-old daughter of Evans She informed the officers that she was home alone but they brushed past her and found Sontag standing behind a portiere with a shotgun in his hand The officers drew their pistols and Evans entered carrying a shotgun The officers surveyed the situation realized they were in trouble and turned to run Evans fired at Witty and wounded him Sontag raised his shotgun and fired at Smith From then on the men were wanted outlaws They jumped into die wagon and raced for the mountains Concern for family however and the need tor food and clothing brought them back to the ranch that night Deputy Sheriff Dan Overall had posted a guard around the stable When the men returned they walked into an area staked out by the posse The battle raged with the outlaws supposedly holed up in the stable Shots were fired at the flashes from fire arms in the areas held by the opposing forces Deputy Sheriff Oscar Beaver was killed Then there were no more shots from the stable and only groans broke the stillness of the night When daylight came and die remaining members of the posse entered the barn they found it unoccupied aside from a wounded horse The outlaws had vanished Indian Trackers Used By then the hunt for Evans and Sontag had attracted statewide attention Two Indian trackers were brought in from Arizona to lead the search for the duo The posse trailed the outlaws into the hills and back to the plains The outlaws took over a cabin near Sampson's Flat where Evans had a gold claim This cabin was owned by a man named Young but was being used as a storage house by an Englishman who was gold mining in the area On that particular morning the Englishman entered the cabin and found Sontag and Evans sitting there By Esther Henderson Good and evil are sometimes closely associated The Central Pacific Rail-mad later Southern Pacific was largely responsible for opening up the San Joaquin Valley to the rest of the country However in giving valley residents an opportunity to deliver their commodities to market the railroad also became the cause of trouble from some citizens Two of such were destined to become the valley's most notorious and controversial outlaws Since the railroad became the means of transportation of items of great and lesser value gold in payment tor these items was known to be carried often on the trains which hurried across the valley floor Thus the railroad became a robbery tar-ff By 1892 four holdups had occurred A fifth was accomplished on August 3 1892 at Collis This station named in honor of Collis Huntington one of the partners of Central Pacific fame has since been renamed Kerman Enter Evans Soon after this a man named Christopher Evans came under suspicion The whisper began that since he had served in the Civil War and later had fought in the Indian wars he was well accustomed to the smell of gun powder The rumor grew although Evans had gained the respect and confidence of his neighbors in and around Visalia The rumors persisted that something was amiss and Evans moved to Modesto and bought a livery stable A fire destroyed his stable Researchers Find Clue To Pimple Cause NEW YORK (UPI) Medical scientists have turned up what may be the most promising clue yet to the cause of the morale-shattering affliction of teen-agers commonly labeled pimples but whose formal medical name is acne vulgaris The clue was found in sebum the oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands of the skin which serves the useful purpose of keeping the skin and die hair soft The new scientific finding is that it contains something which sets the stage for pimples It was reported by Dr Albert Kligman and Mrs Adrienne Katz of the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia The scientists are now trying to find the causative ingredients in sebum but they warned against any expectation that success would lead quickly to an effective remedy for acne All people produce sebum all their lives yet acne is rare except in adolescents may fuel the process but not everyone catches fire" they said susceptibility is decisive but unfortunately RAIL APPOINTMENT SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) -Robert King has been appointed assistant
