UN1FAX SAIGON (UPI) - Communist troops attacked South Vietnamese positions with mortar fire today in the Mekong Delta, where clashes in the last three days produced some of the bloodiest fighting since the cease-fire. South Vietnamese command spokesman Lt. Col. Le Trung Hicn said the Communists hit government positions between Cai Lay and Cai Be with 38 rounds of 82mm mortar, killing one South Vietnamese soldier and wounding two others. 57 Communists Men said South Vietnamese troops killed 57 Communists in the same area only seven hours South Vietnamese unit killed 43 Communists on Monday, he said. The South Vietnamese command said 159 Communists have been killed between Cai Lay and Cai Be since Sunday while South Vietnamese losses have been 27 killed and 58 wounded in the four days of fighting. Cai Lay is 45 miles southwest of Saigon. Cai Be is 15 miles farther from the capital. One government military source said the Communists may be trying to cut Highway 4 —the Saigon rice road—which runs between the two towns. The highway is the major road from the Delta to Saigon. The Communists periodically try lo sever the highway in an attempt to cut off the rice supply to more than 3 million residents of Saigon. A military source said despite the fighting in the Delta the main Communist thrust is expected soon along the Central Vietnamese coast in Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces, about 300 miles north of Saigon. In a truce development, South Vietnam said it had asked Japan to replace Canada in the main peace supervisory force, but that Japan had declined because its constitution forbids international military activities Troops Cut Vital Highway PHNOM PENH (UPI) Communist troops cut a vital highway today only 17 miles below Phnom Penh, severing the capital's only link with the major Cambodian seaport and imperiling a populous provincial capital. Military sources said Communists routed a battalion of Cambodian troops in fierce fighting Tuesday that ended ABOVE ALL MAKE IT WHITE'S ROOFING 342-0185 with the cutting of Highway 4. The road is the sole link to the Kompong Som seaport 120 miles southwest of Phnom Penh. Residents of Phnom Penh could hear U.S. warplanes bombing in the battle area but there were no details of the raids. A field officer at Ang Snoul, the last government-occupied town on the Phnom Penh side of the roadblock, said Communists were digging, in lVa miles southwest of the town. Intelligence officers said the rebels were apparently trying to isolate the provincial capital of Kompong Speu, a town on Highway 4, 32 miles southwest of Phnom Penh. Hundreds of civilian refugees from towns threatened by the rebel thrust began pouring into Phnom Penh today. Fighting broke out along the highway Tuesday when a government reinforcement bat- Now You Know . . . U.S. jet fighter - bombers blasted the heavily forested area, but as soon as the planes left the Communists slammed the battalion with heavy mortar barrages and scattered the government troops. UPI photographer Pat Sun, who was with the battalion said the Cambodians fough back for only about 20 minutes before dispersing. He said government soldiers carried their mortars and small arms I with them but left behind huge stacks of mortar ammunition.
