Dragging operations were continued along the Friant-Kem Canal southeast of Orosi today for the body of a tractor driver who presumably drowned after his tractor rolled down the canal bank yesterday The object of the search near Avenue 400 and Road 144 is Jesus Lara Medina about 42 of Santa Paula Ven tura County an employe of a Sepulveda Los Angeles County general contractor who is doing reconditioning work for the bureau of reclamation on 30 timber bridges on the canal between Friant Dam and Bakersfield Tractor Removed Scuba divers yesterday went into the canal and searched through the deep waters in the vicinity of the tractor in hope of finding the body nearby However there was no sign of Medina so the tractor was pulled out The bureau is using draglines and other heavy equipment and the sheriffs office said it had relinquished most of the search operations to reclamation crews The sheriffs department said Medina last was seen cleaning up the area around a bridge where work had just been completed about 11:30 AM yesterday by Butler a farm laborer in that area Search By Employee Earl Wilson the contractor started looking for Medina about noon and could not find either him or the tractor Wilson later saw where the tractor went down the side of the canal Wilson said Medina was on the first day at the job He theorized Medina was turning the tractor around on an operational road on the west side of the canal about 25 yards south of a bridge when the vehicle slid backward and overturned into the canal Orchestra Without Guest Star Shows Versatility County Committee on School District Organization given to the Madera Union High School trustees last night point to one conclusion The proposed areawide junior college while still in the tentative stage is taking shape Norman Gould county su-perintendent of schools and Rinaldo Wren principal and district supervisor of Madera High School made the reports They served on the finance sub committee Gould stressing that his was a "progress report" and in no way final said the junior college would cost resi- dents of 18 high school dis 'tricts stretching over five counties 36 cents for each $100 assessed valuation 1 Cent Over Maximum The 36 cent tax rate is 1 cent more than the maximum a junior college district is permitted by law to charge Gould says it can be handled if the voters approve 'an override tax He said the 36 cents represents a reduction from tuition taxes projected to 1964-65 for Fresno Tulare and Kings Counties residents students to a junior college when not a member of a district The rate would be a slight increase over estimated tuition taxes for Merced and Madera Counties Gold broke the tax rate into there sections Twenty six cents of the tax would be for assuming rental and operat-' ing costs of the existing city college and Reedley College plants An override tax of 5 cents would be needed to re- tire the bonded indebtedness of the two schools and another 5 cent override tax would be charged to pay accrued equity of the two $41 Million Equity The finance report shows an appraised value of almost $111 million for the Fresno and Reedley schools with $41 million in accrued equity Gould said the new district would receive about $28 mil-: lion in grants He said the actual cost of the district would be $8308-912 to be paid off on the 36 cent tax rate over the whole district The district itself also is taking shape Gould and Wren outlined a plan favored by the boun daries and trustees area subcommittee which divides the district into five zones Zone one would be comprised of the Madera Chow-chilla and Dos Palos High School Districts with one trustee representing it The Caruthers Central Fowler Latoii Washington Union of Easton and Kerman Districts make up area two with one trustee Area three has Selma Kingsburg Dinuba Parlier and Reedley with one trustee The Sierra Union and Sanger High School Districts would be aligned in district melodic use of the material in the tone row which forms the basis for the work while carefully avoiding extreme dissonances in the harmonic structure It was played well by the orchestra and was warmly received by last small audience Vermel chose Brandenburg Concerto No 3 as a vehicle for the display of the string section While the strings still lack somewhat in the production of a mature sectional sound the Bach was played musically and with a bright buoyant feeling Alan Rea provided the harpsichord cadenza which separates the principal movements Berlioz1 main contribution to music was his imaginative orchestration and the adapta tion of program music to the traditional symphony form Both characteristics are evi dent in the Symphonie Fan tastique a long sometimes wearisome work charged with emotionalism and sentiment It is not an easy piece of music to perform but Vermel and the orchestra were for the most part equal to the task School From tage 1-C evaluate the of vocational be repeated tonight at 8:30 Tickets will be on sale in the high school auditorium box office Vermel programed Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique as the major work of the concert but the most interesting of the evening was heard prior to the intermission The first half of the program spanned four centuries of musical development from the 16th Century writing of Giovanni Gabrieli to the 20th Century compositions of Dr James Winter and Dr Arthur Bryon both members of the orchestra Dr Canzona For Double Brass Choir and Ga brieli's Sonata Pian Forte were presented to show off the orchestra's fine brass section The two works offer an interesting contrast in the handling of the two choirs the traditional 16th Century sounds of Gabrieli and the moderately dissount modem harmonies employed by Dr Winter Both served well to display the smooth full tone which the philharmonic brasses have been contributing to the or chestra over the years And both works have obvious merit as fine old and of antiphonal writing Dr work Pragma-tism No 1 takes its title from the effort to produce a practical piece of Home Grocery Breakins Yield Little For Thief A burglar apparently searching for money had
