The Index-Journal, 5A Sunday, March 17, 1996 Greenwood native hits TV with his creation By STACY WHITE Index-Journal staff writer GREENWOOD Move over Barney there's a younger, hip-' per, greener character slated to become the newest star of children's television programming. Dooley, an emerald-colored mix of alligator, dinosaur and imagination, is making his way to national fame, according to his creator, Mark Riddle. "He's a character with moral values that children can relate to," Riddle, a native of Greenwood, said. "I think parents will really enjoy it as well." The show, geared toward kids ages 2 through 6, will feature Dooley and seven other costumed characters teaching life lessons to children through song, dance and stories. "I feel strongly that it's going to be the best show that's ever been on television," Riddle said. "It's like a one in a million chance for a dream come true." Riddle's dream began almost seven years ago, with the creation of a character named Dinky, illustrated by Kevin Barry, of T.B. Riddles in Greenwood. Riddle then collaborated with Gary Zeidenstein of Cincinnati, to form Mr. Z's Animation and Production Corporation, which backs Dooley. After discovering an old television show starring a dinosaur named Dinky, Riddle changed his creation's name to Dooley because "I didn't want him to be associated with any other character." "We started out with T-shirts and those went over pretty well so we decided to branch out and go after the television market," Riddle said. "We actually had it before Barney came out, but we held back because we wanted to do it right." Still, he admits that having just half of Barney's success with children "would be great." Ten pilot episodes of Dooley will air between July 15 and August 31 on Public Broadcasting Stations throughout the country although not in Riddle's native South Carolina. "We're hitting the big cities right now, but I would love for the South Carolina PBS station to pick it up," Riddle said, adding that the show would air twice a day on Saturday mornings in cities such as Atlanta, Tampa, Detroit and Phoenix. Riddle said he signed on with Scripps Howard Broadcasting because of their commitment to quality children's television programming. "We wanted our show to have a lot of good morals, values and lessons because so many people now have lost that," he said. "If you don't learn them before the first grade then it's hard to recapture those lessons." CN3?
