Fresno Slate rode the passing arm of Nef Cortes to 21 second-quarter points and the Bulldogs put the bite on Wichita State 24-12 in a three-hour battle here Saturday night The loss WSU's first in the last three games dropped the Shocker record to 1-8-1 going into next week's finale at Memphis State Fresno boosted its season mark to and avenged last loss at Wichita Wichita Slate scored its second touchdown with only eight seconds remaining to pull to the bottom half of a 21-12 score at halftime on a chilly foggy night It took the Shockers only three plays and 34 seconds to cover 77 yards for the score after Fresno Slate had scored its third TD on a 81-yard interception return by Calvin Lane with only 42 seconds showing Sophomore quarterback Sam Adkins playing before a large group of California family and friends hooked up with freshman Mike Copeland on a 34-yard pass play to start things rolling After a nine-yarder to Kent Carpenter WSU used its only remaining time out with 16 seconds left Adkins then found Steve Baker the only other Californian to make the trip behind a pair of defenders in the end zone for 32-yard scoring strike Adkins tried to run in the conversion attempt but was stopped at the Friends Foe Flagged 9-7 But Goes Down Kicking two-point goalline other scoring march was set up by a fumble recovery by comerback Phil Ellis at the WSU 42 A half-down plays later the combo of Adkins and Stan Ricketts which started the drive with a 14-yard gainer clicked for the final 33 yards as Ricketts beat his man and was all alone as he stepped into the end zone The extra-point kick by Dan Vess was wide right and the Shocks trailed 7-6 with 5:28 left in the half The Wichita defense contained the strong passing game of Cortes for one quarter but couldn't keep up the pace Cortez the Junior who had passed for 1600 yards and 13 touchdowns going into the game completed only one of his completion lost a first quarter and By JOHN MURPHY Staff Writer L1NDSBORG Kan An offsides penalty cost Bethany a field goal and that field goal would have been the difference against Kansas Conference champion Friends Saturday night Friends went on to hold Bethany scoreless in the second half as the bowl-bound Falcons completed their first unbeaten KCAC season ever with a 6-7 victory The Falcons will take an 84) KCAC mark ami a 9-1 overall record into the late in the third quarter Kicking specialist Ken Pabst Just got a 40-yarder over the cross bar and it appeared Bethany was on top 199 But a yellow flag at the line of scrimmage brought the ball back and 45-yard try was partially blocked Three Friends pass Interceptions by the secondary slopped three Bethany fourtlHjuarter drives including Jim Buchanan's steal as time ran out Friends scored all of its points In the first quarter Gary Tickner booted a 2-1-yard field goal for a 39 lead and a blocked punt set up the only Falcon TD (Please tore to Page 6F CoL 3) McMichael came up with a couple more big plays while taking KU 78 yards to score just 1:34 before the end oil the half He passed 24 yards to Edwards after just escaping LeRoy again 'Then he found Edwards open just inside the corner of the end zone clear of safety Zac Henderson for a 13-yard touchdown pass McMichael's 80 yards rushing for the day and his 140 yards passing (15 of 27 with 2 interceptions) accounted for all but 83 yards of total offense (163 rushing and 140 passing) That tells you something of what LeRoy and Dewey Selmon and Jimbo Elrod and the boys did to the rest of KU's offense They stuffed it The Sooners meanwhile performing the great land rush all again They rushed up and down the field all day but in the early going something usually happened before they could settle in the end zone Tony DiRienzo missed a 34-yard field goal after OU drove to 18 And Steve Davis fumbled at KU's three when Kurt Knoff smacked him Bt the end of a 14-yard run So the Sooners went to the locker room just one touchdown up and the Jayhawks thought they were in it But the Sooners didn't really shine that first said OU receiver Tinker Owens "We really worried about losing We just knew we needed to win It seemed the Sooners were due to explode any minute And they did scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter what makes me said Knoff played 'em well and the score doesn't show it I know only got the No 1 ranking to play for but I like them running it OU coach Barry Switzer didn't see it quite that way told our kids that we were not going to call a time out in order to get the last score on the board We did not want a cheapie "I did not think that the last score was cheap either It just so happened that the opportunity to score again at the end of the game was there and we were able to take advantage of it"
