"He's a heck of a football player, a very good prospect," said New York Giants general manager George Young, watching from the press box. "Wha? position? I don't know." After DeArmas opened the scoring, Davis completed a 64-yard drive with his 2-yard TD run. POINT GETTER: Earnhardt, known to most of his competitors as The Intimidator, deserves his reputation as a hard-nosed competitor. STILL SEARCHING: Longtime Winston Cup team owner Bud Moore continues to keep his garage doors open despite a so-far fruitless search for a primary sponsor. But Moore remains optimistic enough to have hired former Winston Cup regular Wally Dallenbach Jr. as test driver for the Ford tests this month at Daytona International Speedway. Greg Moore, Bud's son and the team manager, said, "We think a lot of Wally and we know there is a lot of talent there. We think it would make for a very good package if we can get everything worked out" "This is a great opportunity to drive for Bud Moore," DaUenbach said.

"I sure hope it turns into a full-time deal" Still, finding a sponsor remains a key to any deal "We know we have to get ready to go racing, and withthat thought 1 Toms' score at the Tucson National course left him at 11 -under 204, one shot ahead of 14-year veteran Ronnie Black, whose 66 boosted him into position to win his third tournament. Defending champion Phil Mickelson, who also won in Tucson in 1991 as an amateur, and Edwards were linked at 206. Lee Janzen and Bob Lohr each carded a 66, matching Black for the low score of the round, and pulled in at 207. Dillard Pruitt, Bruce Lietzke, Fred Funk and Bob Estes joined them three shots off the pace. Curtis Strange, Bob Tway and Jeff Maggcrt were at 208, while Mark O'Meara, winner of the first 1996 tour event last week, and four other golfers were within five shots of Toms.

Mickelson, Janzen and Lietzke are among the seven players who got their first PGA title at Tucson, possibly a good omen for Toms and Edwards, neither a winner yet on the tour. Toms had his best finish at Tucson in 1992. Two years later, he lost his card and had to requalify in 1995 by finishing third in earnings on the Nike Tour. Edwards, whose best finish was a tie for second in the 1992 B.C. Open, has played seven seasons on tour without finishing higher than 106th on the money list.

Toms had a steady round five birdies and two bogeys in the first 15 holes before finishing with three straight pars. (AP) While David Toms and second-round leader Joel Edwards were in a lockstep until the final hole of the Nortel Open's third round, a swarm of bees attacked golfer Keith Fergus and his caddy Saturday while they were on the practice range at Tucson National golf course following the third round. Fergus fled several hundred feet along the first fairway to get away, and caddy Artie Granfield jumped into a lake between the first and 18th holes.

Fergus received multiple stings on the head, neck and arms, but PGA officials said he wasn't seriously hurt. Granfield, of Reseda, and three spectators also were hit. "I got stung about 10 or 20 times," said Fergus, whose 5-under-par 67 was one of the best rounds of the afternoon. Tournament leaders were on the back nine, but no one other players were attacked. A crew from the Rural Metro firefighting company sprayed the area with a toxic foam which knocked out the bees, and a beekeeper was brought in to remove the queen.

Pest controls officials said the bees appeared to be domestic, not the Africanized version noted for irritability and attacking without provocation. On the course, Toms completed a 3-under-par 69 Saturday by parring No. 18. One twosome later, Edwards four-putted the same green and relinquished his share of the lead. in mind, we have been talking with Wally," Greg Moore said.

"We actually are in great shape car-wise and engine-wise, depending on what NASCAR does with the rules. We just need to know what color to paint these cars and what (sponsor) name to put on them."
