Leos sweep to victory By TIM CLARK PB Correspondent LEWISTON. IDA. La Verne College completed a three-game sweep in the Area One NAIA Baseball Playoffs Saturday. Paul McGuire (9-1) scattered four singles as the Leopards easily defeated defending champion Lewis- Clark State, 5-1. So the Leos will carry a 38-10 record into the NAIA World Series beginning a week from today at St.

Joseph, Mo. Neither the victory nor the excellent pitching surprised coach Ben Hines. I'm not Hines exclaimed. had good pitching all year. I start feeling good about St.

Joe today. I started feeling good about St. Joe in January. pleased with this he continued. thought we looked real good and made a fine showing.

Tony Valverde, only a junior, ran sixth in the 880 Janet Ballard set a CIF 3A record in the 220 with a time of 25.0 and ran second in the 100. Pomona's Barney Sue Carral won the 440 in 59.0. took third in the 880 and anchored a fourth-place in the mile relay. Veronica Bell of Garey took second in the long jump and fourth in the 100 and Kristin Sorrensen placed fifth in the long jump and sixth in the hurdles.

First through third places in each and girls' varsity event will advance to the state qualifying meet Friday night at Cerritos College. El Toro won the girls competition with 52 points. In frosh-soph competition, Arroyo scored 41 points to beat Pomona (36) and Ganesha (27). Floyd Williams won the triple jump at 45 feet. inch and anchored the Giants 440 relay victory.

's Brown dual winner By MARK GRIP PB Correspondent PLACENTIA Alta Loma sophomore Randy Brown took individual titles in the mile and two mile runs in the Irosh-soph division of the CIF 2A track finals at Valencia High's Bradford Stadium here Saturday night. Brown won both of his heats in the two races last week to advance to the finals, running last week with a full- head of hair. Brown, wearing a crew-cut and a blue headband, had to defeat a tough competitor in both races.

Bassett Rich Benevidez also ran in the 880, which he won, besides giving Brown a tough time in the other two distances. Brown and Benevidez ran close for the better part of both races with Brown out-kicking the Bassett sophomore for wins in both races. Brown won the mile in 4.17.9 just over the current 2A record of 4:16.5. The Brown came back later in the evening to win the two mile in 9:28 0 sophomore Debbie Kainz shattered the record in the 440 in 56 6 Kainz was far ahead at the finish to break her previous record of 58 5. She also anchored girl's mile relay team to fourth place in 4:08.2.

Steve Keffer vaulted 13- feet, six inches to win the frosh-soph pole vault and tie the 2A mark. The varsity pole vaulter Doug Brogdon figured to finish high, but missed on his only attempt. With the bar at 13-6, pole snapped in half with him being injured and unable to finish competition. Ontario sophomore John Gary took seconds in both the 330 low hurdles and the 440 in the frosh-soph division with times of 39.3(330 lows) and 51.5 (440). Gary's hurdle time broke the previous record of 39.5.

San Keith Walker long jumped 20-11 to take second in the frosh-soph event Alta Loma Joel Hope finished third in the varsity mile in 4:15.7. All first-place finishers in the 2A will advance to the state qualifying meet next Friday at Cerritos College. The best second place times in all four divisions (1A, 2A, 3A, 4A).
