m. of Monday. April 1st, l89, sealed proposals for the following street work, to be done according to the (specifications contained herein and in Council Resolution No. 93'JO. to wit: Thit Thirteenth svenue, in said city, from the northerly line of Twenty second street to the northerly line oi East Twenty eighth i-treet, be graded, recurbed and macadam ized lo the official lite and grade, also, that two and two culverts with be constructed in each of its crossins with East Twenty third and East Twenty fourth sticets, and two crosswalks and one culvtrt with crosswalk be constructed at the intersection of Kast Twenty-fifth, East Twenty-sixth.

Mrs. Mathews, Superintendent of Literature, reported S00 pages distributed, and spoke of the interest of prominent writers in the temperance question, as witnessed by articles in Scribner't and Harper' magazines by Julian Hawthorne and Sarah Orme Jewett.

M. G. C. Edbolm, Superintendent of the Preii, reported the continuance of the weekly Woman's Christian Temperance Union column in Thx Tbjbvnb and the Western Christian Union. The President, Mrs.

Johntton, voiced the hearty thank of the onion to these papers. Mrs. I. M. Johnson reported on the use of unfermented wine at the Mrs.

Coggswell repotted on social purity that at the mothers' taeetinea she had tried to interest mothers to train their girls specially on this subject, thus preventing the social evil. She had visited the Rescue Home under the Salvation Army on Fifth and Brush streets. There are five reformed young women, all converted and leading pure lives. Places have been found for several others in Christian families. Dr.

Van Kirk reported mothers' meetings every Friday afternoon at S77 Tenth street as increasing iu interest. The mothers' meeting for the study of heredity and hygiene will be held in her rooms, 1014 Broadway, the second Tuesday of the month. Mrs. Negus reported that certain bills promulgated by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union had been passed by tne Legislature. The age of consent has been raised from ten to fourteen years.

Two' industrial schools have been established, one at lone. Amador county, and one in Los Angeles. The Police Matron bill passed, so that every town of over 30.000 population may have appointed a woman for the care of female Municipal suffrage was defeated by a small majority. Laura De Force Gordon submitted a bill for educational suffrage, which passed the Senate, 24 to 8, and. was tabled in the Assembly, though the A WORD OF WARNING.
