"What kind of a man do they think I am?" he continued. I have stood a good deal, but this last act ot placing me in Class is the straw which has broken the camel's back.

Yes; I have written to Indianapolis for my contract and advance money, bat that was before I learned that I had been placed in Class b. I would have gone back, to the Hoosier City and played good ball for them, as I always have doue. Now, however, I shall return the contract without my signature. I do not belong in Class B. I know what kind of bail 1 have played and can play.

So does every man, woman, and child in the United States who know anything about the game. No; my guardians have gone too far this time. I will not, as I said before, play in Indianapolis if, placed in Class B. Why, when the Hoosiers are on a trip, Jack Glasscock and myself are orced to play in every game, exhibition as well as championship. If an exhibition game is to be played, and Jack or myself try to get a lay off, what do you think the manager says? Dock bunting in this county at the present time ia- not a Tery exciting sport. A few days, ago a party from this citv paid a visit 'to Willow Lodge, bat they returned with empty bag. at Tubbs bland "he ducks are plentiful, and large bags are re- ported. Below will be found a review the week's sporting events. STRAY HITS, Voiti 'rrm the irild and Flashes rem th Diamond.

Tinkham, formerly with the Tribunes, is open to an engagement. Harrington, the manager of the Bay City nine, gave hia men oinner last Sunday. Robin still continues to improve in bis pitching. He has a bright future before him. Big Burke, who played with Oakland nine some urue Bince, has signed "witn tseattie ciud.

Manager Robinson still lias in view trip lu to the interior with his new time oeiore season opens. The home nine will practice every day at the Center street park until the eeasoB of 18S9 opens in March. Pitcher Caugblsn says his arm is in fine condition, and announces that he will do the Tribunes up next Sunday. -Manager Robinson has been attending to baseball business while the latter is on his trip with his show. Manager Robinson has signed all his men for next season but one.

He believes In taking his time, and securing good men. Thtre is some curiosity concerning who Manager Robinson will sign, for change catcher with Coughlan. He will be an Eastern man. Billy Noble, who played last season with the Monterey Cluo and won the championship, for has returned to this city, and will catch for Cough-Tarrhext Sunday. Charlie Harmon' will be seen on the diamond at the Center street park next Sunday.

He is a good player. -Tount of himself. Adams, a young man lately from the JtASt, is majang a recora at tne center street park. He has proved to be a hard hitter and Manager Robinson is A man named Esterbrook continues to make the people weary 'who attend the games at the Center street park. He tries to see how big a fool he can make out of himself by his nonsensical tactics.

Bmalley, the hayseed plaver, continues to keep up his practice. He will De the extra, man for the Oakland nine next season. In the meantime he will WUUUUQ IV flay fcUlTU UUQ iUC champion Tribune nine, Jftry Tenny has been put in class by President xoung, which only allows him $2250 for the season. This iscer- tainly not enough for the greatest third baseman in the business, and it is highly probable that ere will never sign for any such figure, and he is fool- ish if he does. Exckanae.

Fred Roberta, one of the best amateur player in this State, has decided to enter the professional ranks, and has accepted an offer from the Sacramento Club to play witu that nine next season. Roberts has been playing second base for the Tribune nine during the past season, and has made a splendid record. He will prove a success with the country club: The Australians have caught on to the great American game and also some of the players. This is the way one oi the papers sixes up John Montgomery Ward: Ward (New York Club) is specially noted for his pitching qualifications, and it is asserted that he has -sufficient command of the ball to deceive the batter with what is called curve pitching, and can also field splendidly at third base." That the advent of new faces and players will arouse theenthusjsm now in many persons is bevond question. The extraordinary attendance- at the Height street grounds on the occasion of the first contest between A .1 All vujwigfio 11 Aii-Aiucncis gave testimony of the appreciation oi the change from the old routine.

1 1 is also true that there is plenty of talent on the coast that has (not been brought into prominence. Experiments are always costly tn baseball, and men who have money and victory at stake fight very shy of using material that may jCY detriment to the success of their leamsv hage. r. i -1 i. in veil 'vniuji icucf tw iiguutut Brush of the Indianapolis teim, written a few days before the collapse of tbe -club, should convince Californians that the third baseman's heart is not on the jcoast but in the East, The letter is -dated Oakland, January 23d, and in it 'Denny says: "tarn ready to aign for next season and you may mail me contract at your earliest convenience." Since Jerry wrote to Indianapolis he learned he bad been placed in class which means a reduction of salary- He now says he will not go East at the price his class -receives.

Stockton is making aa effort to get him. QUI Those who know Denny are a ware of the fact that hit heart is with Oakland. He always votes here and bas his home and family in Oakland. It is surely a business proposition with Denny as to whether he will remain here or play in the East. Workmen will soon commence making "alterations in the Haight street grounds.

The lower portion of the front wall of the stand behind the plate will be cut a way and a wire partition Thia will open- up a view where about 600 persons may comfortably witness the games. The press tand and the olubboose near by will be removed from the field to the jrrand stand. 'According to present arrangements live itntir rtel1 will hm miHmIt tree from spectators. In the event of a larger number attending than can be accommodated with seat, a gate tinder the right and field stand will be opened and the public admitted to this portion of the A movable wire fence, so fixed that it can be placed in position in five minutes, will restrict the territory of the overflow. The old system of defining the base and fool lines with whitewash will be done away with, and Instead permanent lines of rubber and cement will be laid.

Five new exit gates have been placed ia the fences, and the grounds will be cleared within fire minutes from the time the last n. has been declared oat. The question bas often bean asted. Has not young Phil Knell bera sufficiently punished for jumping from the Oakland team, to go East? 17 think he has, and that the California League would only be doing the right act by reinstating the young fellow That he i wrors? be acknowledges. Herman Tubbs andfl. B. Huff returned from Tubbs Island a few days ago, whither they had been on a hunting trin. They report a great field for duck bunting. The gentlemen returned with 80 canVasback, 201 mallard, and 13 geese.

"This was indeed a record. Charles Boardman has gone to the Sonoma marshes duck hunting. Charley has a eood eye, and is sure to return with a big bag. Last Saturday morning Enail Kus-banukber, W. Foose.

F. W. Hen-shaw, Charley Tuttle. Captain MagiU, and J. G.

Edwards went on an excursion to Willow Lodge bunting grounds in search of the fine fat mallard. It cannot be said that they met with flattering success. Early in the day about sixteen dncka were. slaughtered by the party. In the afternoon Henshaw and TuiUe returned" 4d jUrts ty and with them came all the dijeis that had been killed.

So the font; again started ont to try and secure a bag, but they made a complete failure. Probably they had been informed that two military gentlemen, Captain Ma-gill and Colonel Edwards were about to visit the hunting grounds. But, at all events, the duces had Bought new feeding grounds, and the record fur the afternoon showed that Mr. 'Foote had killed two ducks, while Mr. Nusbaumer bad slaughtered five.

Then the party gathered around the camp lire. Mr. Nusbaumer was and seemed to be brooding over his hard luck. Finally he teas beard to remark. gentle, silvery tones, that were wafted over the smooth surface of the ductless sloughs by the gentle breeze that came tripping merrily oyer tbe marshes.

again remarked Mr. Nusbaumer to his friend Edwards. "Eddie, two of us are hunters, and tKO of us are chumps," and the Deputy District Attorney gave a sigh, just as a bat came flitting past the camp fire. "Eddie" was thoughtful for a moment. After mature deliberation he replied: "Oh! yes.

Judge, that is so." Upon hearing thia reply Mr. us-baumer became thoughtful. It was more than he could fathom. Be knew that Edwards had not slain a single duct, but he ventured to remark "Do you know who the hunters are?"
