B. B. Redding lectured on Wednesday afternoon to a good audience at the Uni versity, on the subject of a visit which he made to tha Galapagos Islands in 188a These Islands form a volcanic group in the Pacifio Ocean, lying close to the equator, and some five hundred: miles from the South American coast. They are used ss a penal settlement by the Republic of Ecuador. Land tortoises and largo land and aea liaards are the animals most com' monly found upon the group, and the aea Uxards are' remarkable aa being the only marine now known to exist.

The rentable and animal life of the inland is unMue. notunn line neing- Known iut in anv etner nan oz tne woria. There are thirty-one varieties of land birds found on the group, ana ot tnes oniy one ia to be found on the American continent. More than one-half of the species of Its flora differs from the rest of ths world. The group has five varieties of irigantic land tortoises, each of which belongs ex-clnaivalv to a aeoarate island, and each island has peculiar species ot Diras wnicn are not found anywhere else In the group nor anywhere else in the world.

Rain sel dom falls, and then only during the months of November, December and January. The volcanic ash absorbs all the water, and there are. consequently no streams in any of tha group. The higher elevations of the islands are visited Dy neavy xogs, which furnish enough moisture for the prop. agation of dense vegetation.

Bnt on tl lowlands, near the coast, nothing higher in the scale of vegetable life than cactus to be found, owing to the absence of moisture. The lowlands are consequently little better than a barren desert, overrun with monster lizards. The convicts cultivate portions of the higher plateaus, on which a variety of tropical fruits and vegetables are raised by them. The sea surrounding the inlands is alive with fish, and tne abund ance of gigantic land tortoises furnish the settlement with plenty ot tresh meat. EPISCOPAL CONVENTION.

Bhoads, residing at No. 214 W. Ninth street, says bs knows more about the law of contrast than he did last winter. He did not know then what inflammatory rheumatism was. He has since been thoroughly initiated into all its mysteries, and there ia a very steep con treat between the feelings of a man when hs is dosed with rheumatism and enjoying immunity from it.

During tha Christmas holidays he was aroused from his sleep a Done two cioca: in tne morning by a terrible pain in his right hand and wrist. He felt as if his arm weighed a ton and had been crushed by an elephant. He never did have anything to hurt him so badly in bis life. Hs didn't sleep any more that night, for the pain grew rapidly worse until eight clock, wben be applied ST. ALU tsa OIL.

His hand had grown so stiff by the time the first application was made that he could not move a hnger. and even or, JACOBS OIL could not induce the die ease to loose its grip until it had been used two days. At the end of that time, however, the famous old pain annihilator drove out the lat vestige of pain, and he was all right again and ready to eat, sleep and enjoy himself like other men. He has not had any sign of it since, and does not care to make its acquaintance. A tjarflra Sola of Faraltars WS11 A a.

They love to roll as a sVeet morsel under their tongues tha high-sounding phrase, "Tha party of the people." And all this in spite of the feci that twenty-two years ago it rebelled, seceded, fought, bled and died for slavery? Yen, an tha wolf is the friend jof the lamb; seizing and devouring it. And whenever it has had power sino too war, it has dona its best to return labor to its former servue position, to degrade it, cheat and de fraud the laborer, and above all drive him out of politics. It has had so little to do in the government of Northern States, that its true inwardneea can only be revealed partially. The work' inffmen in this State refused to trust the Demooratioj party and made one of tneir own. Ana wnea uui luaarwiveu, only part of the members joined the Democracy.

alXOCH cast his lot with it, because his character naturally gravitated toward the lower levels. The leaders of that' party to-day are friends of labor with a vengeance. Now, because some Eastern Republicans cannot see that the Chinese question is not to be confounded! with ordinary labor cannot see that the Chinese are too much like elaves because, in fact, they think we are departinir from the old Landmarks of the party in restricting Chinese immigration, the Democrats have the cool impudenoe to claim that they only love the laboring man they only are entitled to his votes. What has Democracy ever done for the laboring man? Did it pass ths homestead law? The Eight-hour law? The Home' steadr Exemption Act? Has i ever ex sited commoa schools in the States where it has for years had away? What hypocrites! to come now fawning around workingmen, and claim that are friends of labor? Go tell it to those who eannot read or write; who have no meiaoriea; no knowledge of political history; but never hope to deceive American voters by any such false professions or absurd claims. I SanaiBla) Refoi The Superintendent of the City Schools of San Jose states that of lets he has been reducing the work of the pupils in some important particulars.

and finds that the scholars sncoeed far better in their studies with their tasks lessened. Ha is dispensing with the cramming process, and putting the pupils upon the mental diet which forms the basis of a practical education. When it is attempted, to teach a multiplicity of branches, the pupils fail to obtain thorough understanding of any of them but by redudmg the multiplicity of branches, the children progress much faster and With a thorough knowledge of what is given them to learn. We have long considered that the mode which has of late been adopted into the public schools, of attempting too much, was injurious in the extreme. We have been convinced! that our mode of educa tion should bej pruned of much of the filagree work and reduced to a more practical basis, to the advantage of both the pupils and the tax-payers.
