(Staff photo by Alice Hite) at growing old Chest pain is a frequent complaint in children and occurs in children of all ages. Many times children are brought to the physician because parents associate chest pain with heart disease and the parents are concerned that there may be a serious problem causing the chest pain. Especially bothersome to some parents whose children have chest pain, are reports in the media of sudden death in what appeared to be otherwise healthy athletes.

There are many causes of chest pain in children. The most common cause is called idiopathic chest pain. Idiopathic means the cause is unknown. One can only call chest pain idiopathic after they have ruled out other causes. There are various muscle and skeleton conditions which can cause chest pain.

Among these are strains and sprains, inflammation of the ribs and rib joints, and from trauma. A relatively common cause of chest pain in children is called costochondritis which is an inflammation of the ribs in the area where the breastbone and ribs join together. This chest pain is usually diagnosed by the physician finding tenderness over the above mentioned areas. Respiratory problems are a frequent cause of chest pain. Cough, various respiratory infections, asthma and pneumonia are among some of the more common respiratory causes of chest pain.

There are some gastrointes-tional disorders which may cause chest pain in children. Among these are inflammation of the esophagus and the ingestion of a foreign body such as a coin, a small piece of jewelry or a small battery. Another cause of chest pain in children is psychogenic chest pain. This pain is felt to occur secondary to anxiety or stress in children. Such pain is seen in children that are having problems in school, a separation or death in the family, serious illness in the family, a recent move or any other situation that is stressful to the child.

Probably the most serious cause of chest pain in children are cardiac diseaseheart problems. There are various abnormalities of the heart valves that can cause chest pain, certain infections involving the heart and surrounding tissue may cause chest pain. There are also abnormalities of the coronary arteries (artieries that supply circulation to the heart) that may cause children to have pain. There are also many other causes of chest pain in children but the list could go on and on forever. If your child has chest pain that recurs, it is probably a good idea to consult your family doctor and have your child examined.

The minority of the time nothing serious will be found and you and your child will only need to be reassured. Your physician will want to examine your child thoroughly, may even want to get some blood tests, a chest x-ray or maybe an electrocardiogram. In adolescents checking the urine for Cocaine use can sometimes be a worthwhile test. If your child is found to have a serious cause of chest pain, your family doctor will be able to recommend treatment or your child may need referral to a specialist, depending on the given situation. Using a thin, sharp knife, cut a wide band down on side of skin. Peel skin back and eat fruit with a spoon directly from mango. Or, peel skin away with a thin, sharp knife and use as directed. When I was young, my slippers were red; I could kick my heels right over my head. When I grew older, my slippers were blue; I found I could dance the whole night through. But now I am old; my slippers are black: I walk to the store and puff my way back.

I get up each morning and dust off my wits; I pick up the paper and read the obits. If my name is still missing, I know I'm not dead. So, I eat a good And go back to bed.
