lightning set fires swept through the forest at periodic intervals The fires could not kill the larger redwoods except in the rarest instances But the fires did thin the overabundant growth of redwood saplings and virtually wiped out the choking cover of pine and fir which always tends to grow up In a Sierra redwood forest After the fires the new redwood seedlings received an abundance of sunlight and mineral soil both of which are absolutely essential to their growth Thus the great redwood forests flourished under a balance of forces established by Nature' came man and after a few preliminary attempts at cutting down the Sierra forests he decided he ought to preserve these forests instead of destroying them The first thing he did was almost completely to eliminate the element of fire It Is true he occasionally tossed a few cigarets around but iii the main his efforts at fire control snuffed out most of the lightning set fires at their source and allowed pine and fir to grow unchecked around the big redwoods As a result the seeds fell in heavy shade and on soil denuded of its mineral content Reproduction fell off and people thought the Sierra redwoods were dying out Fast Growth Seedlings noticed however that in heavily logged over areas such as Converse Basin and on a smaller scale Mountain Home seeds took root and young redwoods 'shot up more rapidly even than most other varieties of Sierra trees Experiments were tried in which redwood areas were selectively logged not of the redwoods themselves but of overmature pine and fir trees which were choking out the young redwood growth These overmature trees If not logged out eventually would die anyhow and would fall prey to insect pests and disease experiments have shown remarkable evidences of success At Mountain Home the state forestry division is making a practical application of the new principles of redwood forest culture we are preserving every one of the ancient forest patriarchs but higher vealers and redwood forests for many generations of our descendants We are very glad to have people visit the area and see for themselves what Is being accomplished" Schlobohm added that under resent conditions lire is certain-not a desirable agent for thinning the forest as it would wipe out the young redwood growth just getting established in the cutover areas He asked that all visitors be extra careful with fire at this season Funds To Be Appropriated The California Department of Natural Resources has recommended that the state's forestry holdings In the Alountain Home area be rounded out and protected against indiscriminate logging by purchase of a tract of fine redwood trees -known as Camp Lena is the heart of the area and still in private hands This recommendation has been adopted in AB 14 recently signed by Governor Earl Warren Funds for carrying out the directive of AB 14 have not yet teen appropriated but this matter should be taken care of at the earliest possible time The department of natural resources has suggested also the acquisition of 640 acres of partially logged over redwood forest land in Alder Creek canyon directly deross the MIddle-Fork of the Tule River from Alountain Home State Forest This area could be administered as a part of the latter forest with encouragement of new redwood growth The Alder Creek forest adjoins the 'proposed Jordan Peak ski
