Television THE WICHITA EAGLE-BEACON Friday August 23 1983 llC- Wichita Gets New Radio TV Stations This Weekend! Bob Curtright Channel 24 is an over-the-air station that can be received within a 65-mile radius by hooking up a $1 loop antenna to individual TV sets These antennas are available in convenience stores But it will also be carried on most cable TV systems in the middle part of the state In Wichita AirCapital Cablevision will carry it on Channel 4 going to be an unprecedented weekend for Wichita broadcasting with the launching of both an independent television station and an FM station The TV station is the first local one and only UHF (ultra high frequency) station to be added in about 30 years the radio station whose city of license is officially Haysville is the first new frequency in about 15 years for this area KSAS Ch 24 gets the jump on radio KXLK 1053 FM by about 16 hours although both are using the same 1100-foot tower near Colwich for their antennas The TV station which owns the tower winks on at 8 pm Saturday the radio station which leases tower space will go on the air at noon Sunday Both are offering special programming as they rush out of the gate Regular programming for the 18-hour-a-day TV station begins at 7 am Sunday while the regular disc jockeys for the 24-hour adult contemporary radio station start Monday Channel 24 will premiere with a three-hour special The Gift of a nostalgic documentary tracing film comedy from the silents up to deciding whether to carry it As it turns out the dual launch on the same weekend is purely coincidental Working independently because they are owned and operated by different groups both the TV and radio stations suffered delays in getting on the air this summer The TV station is owned by Columbia Communications headed by Houston businessman Alan Rudy The radio station is owned by Scott Reardon of Sioux' Falls SD At one time Channel 24 had hoped to be on by mid-June after the arrival of its first general manager in March He work out and new general manager Harlan Reams arrived three weeks ago to meet Sunday's announced deadline And radio KXLK had announced at least three launch dates in the past couple of months only to be held up by delays in approval of various documents from the Federal Communications Commission The latest delay which prevented the station from launching Aug 14 involved lost paperwork over changing the antenna location by about a block according to general manager station spokesman said All other programming will be supported by commercials Sign-off the first day will be about 1 am The special radio programming for the first day immediately available but the regular DJ lineup at KXLK will be Dan Oneal from 6 to 9 am Barry Casey from 9 am to noon Dave Hays from noon to 3 pm Ron Hanson from 3 to 6 pm Greg Gann from 6 to 10 pm Richard McKay from 10 pm to 2 am and Leanna Brat holding down the overnight from 2 to 6 am Just Wednesday KSAS was added to the cable systems operated by Telecommunications Inc which includes Andover Augusta Derby El Dorado Goddard Halstead Haysville Hesston Maize Mulvane Newton North Newton Park City Peabody Rose Hill Sedgwick To wanda and Valley Center It will be carried on Channel 8 in all but Augusta where it will be Channel 27 and El Dorado and Towanda where It will be Channel 5 The only cable system not carrying Channel 24 according to station spokeswoman Jeffy Isenhower is CSI the Junction City-based company
