THE FRESNO BEE AUGUST 171941 Radio Offers Fine Summer Shows MAGAZINE SECTION The PidQres Small World Is Correct Subs May Rise To Veterans Star In 'Thin Man' Stardom Come Jhe Summer and radio undergoes a minor revolution which bring forth new much of It with new talent and new ideas and more with old namea and familiar althoui re-furhiaheri format Down of auch programs are offered during the Summer and If the producer get one or two that wore aucrexaea they consider their time well spent During the past few year there hare been many that have weathered the rrltlral attention of the listening public among them such headlinera as The Aldrich Family Hobby Lobby Mr Dls-" trirt Attorney What's My Name and others The program What's My Name is bark on the air this Summer as replacement for etie Edgar Bergen-Charlie McCarthy show and conducted by Arlene Francis and John Reed King Also Hated among the substitute programs heard over KMJ are Reg'lar Fellers substituting for the Benny program also on Sunday evening Hap Hazard subbing for Fibber McGee and Molly A Date With Judy holding forth in Bob Hope's spot both on Tuesdays and the Quizzer Baseball program which occupies Eddie customary place on the air Wednesday nights Fellers a dramatization of the popular comic strip of the lie same title brings to the listening audienre the antirs of the gang of small boys and their girl pu (or 1s she) Aggie Riley Their espers on the air parallel those of the funnies and they are a sure cure for the blues Ransom Sherman long one of radio's popular and best known comedians appears as Hap Has ard He is aided and abetted by Durward Kirby announcer ana stooge Edna Odell Hoosler songbird Elmira Roessler another stooge Billy Mills' Orchestra and others One of Bob Hope's verbal Jokes resulted in radio stardom for 14 year old Ann Gillis who is heard ns Judy Foster in a Date With Judy Hope met Ann on a movie lot and jestingly remat ked over to NBC sometime and I'll make you a radio star" She took Bob at his word -and was his fare red He Introduced the titian haired girl to radio producer Bill Lawrence who recalling her screen work gave her an audition and hired her for the role of Judy Budd Hullrk who achieved radio fame as Bud in the team of Stoopnagle and Bud share the chore of conducting the Quizzer Baseball programs with beauteous Benny Venuta who first came to radio a a singer Hullrk appeared with Arlene Frani'i In the first edition of What's My Name three yrais ago and has been In radio for ten years Miss venuta came to radio about three years ago from the stage where she was featured in some musical productions Search the record of radio stage and screen and you will find no busier people than Claudia Morgan and Lester Damon stars of the current series of Dashiell Hammett's stories of the Thin Man Although they have received comparatively little publicity for their previous radio appearanres the star known on the air as Mr and Mrs Nirk Charles have had scores of roles In various radio progiams and on the stage Miss Morgan daughter of the Illustrious Ralph Morgan and niece of Frank Morgan of the movies and radio la credited with appearing In more Broadway plays than any other person In history Despite her youth she has appeared In thirty two plays and currently Is starred In the Broadway success The Man Who Came oDinner She also has been featured in many dramatic programs on the air and made numeroua guest appearances on variety programs She was 17 when she made her dramatic debut in a play with her father and Margaret Anglin She appeared in Strange Interlude in London and opposite Alex-andei Woollcott In Wine Of Choice and in addition bad the leading roles In Dancing Partner and Storm Over Patsy and played in Accent On Youth and Masque Of Kings She has appeared In three feature movies and has been a member of the rast of such radio seriafs as David Harum Big Sister and Lone Journey and guest starred on several of the transcontinental network feature productions She Is a blond 5 feet Inches tall goes In for athletics but spends much of her spare time If any painting designing clothes or at her piano The Thin Man Is her first starring role In a major network feature Damon an actor little known In New York but with a background of eight years on the stage and In radio was chosen lor the role of Nirk Charles after exhaustive tests of a larga group of candidates He entered the theatrical profession eight years rgo and three years ago made his first radio sp- S-arance in a guest spot in the ackatage Wife serial Subsequently he has had the male lead or featured roles in thirteen network serials originating in Chicago and New York Numbered among the program!
