TV—6 Galesburg Register-Majl^al^sbur^ Fri., Sept. 6, 1963 Marriage-Minded Girls Needn't Bother 'Calling Dr Kildare By SCOTT UPI Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD (UPI) - Dick Chamberlain, star of the "Dr. Kildare" series, owns a home that includes a living room, music room, library, den, bedroom, dining room, solarium, study and you name it. Trouble is, they are all rolled into one. Bachelor Chamberlain lives in what amounts to a cabin high in the Hollywood ' Hills overlooking the San Fernando Valley. Set on an acre of ground, the house has a small kitchen, a bathroom and a combination room decorated with his bed, a piano, book cases, a dining room set, stereo equipment and desk. The big room, 26 by 30 feet, generally is in a state of jumbled disarray. But it suits Chamberlain well. He spends less than 10 hours a day in his hideaway during the work week. Up at 6 a.m., the 28-year-old actor fixes his own breakfast, usually scrambled eggs, toast and a glass of milk. And if he has time he cleans up the dishes. Then he's off in his 1963 metallic blue Corvette on the 10-mile trip to M-G-M studios and into his makeup and medical tunic for the day's work. Long Grind Invariably the cameras begin grinding at 7:30 a.m. and keep Dick hopping until the noon break when he takes an hour for lunch in the studio commissary, frequently with an interviewer. Then back to the salt mines until 6:30 in the evening. Then a quick shower, a change of clothes and an entire evening to relax? my lines for the next day," Chamberlain says. "My schedule's been so tight for the past 214 years that I've learned to be a pretty fast eater, reader and sleeper.*' Big Fan Mail Between takes on the set Dick devotes himself to answering as much of his enormous fan mail as possible. He receives more letters and cards than any star in Hollywood movies or tele vision. Even on weekends Chamberlain finds it difficult to relax and call his time his own. He climbs into faded blue jeans and a sweat shirt, his favorite clothes. Chamberlain's closet contains a tuxedo (for professional appearances at banquets and the like), two suits, three sports jackets and an assortment of slacks. Forget it. Chamberlain makes a quick change and dashes off to a diner for a quick steak, baked potato and another glass of milk. Dinner by himself consumes 15 minutes, and Dick is off and running again, either tp his voice teacher or ballet class. Both endeavors, he hopes will broaden his performing talents. "I get home around 9:30 if I'm lucky and I'm so bushed I just fall into bed and try to memorize Wednesday, Sept. 11 WHBF-Channel 4 7-55 We Begin This Day. 8:00 Captain Kangaroo. 9:00 CBS Morning News. 9:30 Beauty BreaK. 10:00 The McCoys. 10:30 Pete and Gladys. 11:00 Love of Life. 11:25 CBS News, 11:30 Search for Tomorrow. 11:45 The Guiding Light. 12:00 Best of Grouchu 12:30 As the World Turns. 1:00 Password. 1:30 Houseparty. 2:00 To Tell the Truth. 2:20 CBS News. 2:30 Edge of Night. 3:00 Secret Storm. 3:30 December Bride. 4:00 Grandpa Happy Show. 5:00 San Francisco Beat. 5:30 Cronkite—CBS News. 6;!00 Local News, Weather and Sports. 6:30 CBS Reports. 7:30 Dobie Gillis. 8:00 Beverly Hillbillies. 8:30 Dick Van Dyke Show. 9:00 Reckoning. 10:00 Jim Koch News. 10:10 Weather Show 10:15 Sports Final 10:30 Mr. Luckv: "Hit and Run." 10:30 Mr. Lucky. 11:00 Checkmate. Once he's dressed Dick frequently sits at his battered spinet, plunking on the keys just often enough to keep his voice controlled while he practices singing. He's made one record album and three singles. "I used to play the piano quite a bit, but I don't have time for it anymore," he explains. "Anyhow, this piano is terrible. I just use the thing to find the right pitch." Hobbies are/out, too.
