Doubled SEQUOIA NATIONAL PARK (Tulare Co) June 26 The Sequoia National Park headquarters here announced today intensification of efforts to gain the closer cooperation of park visitors for fire prevention within the confines of the park Park records show that except for lightning caused blazes which rarely have serious consequences practically all fires in the Sierra are caused by human carelessness Three Rules Offered Three rules were offered by park authorities for the prevention of fires They are: Smoke only In camps or designated places never while traveling along roads or trails below the 7000 feet level Build fires only In designated places Be sure pipe dottle cigars and rigarcts are dead before leaving them Two Fires Quelled A statement by park officials says: Two fires occurred In the foothill portion of the park during the past week Both although insignificant in area burned were highly dangerous The first blaze reported June 20th by a lookout proved to he a camp fire built by picnickers along side the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River in an area not designated for fires The following afternoon fire was discovered burning in the brush covered slope along the river adjacent to the park headquarters at Ash Mountain Only the prompt discovery and reporting of this blaze by a visitor and the quick action of fire crew members prevented a serious conflagration This fire is thought to have been caused bj a fisherman's carelessly abandonee camp fire or discarded clgaret or match Ranging in elevation from 14496 feet above sea level at Mt Whitney to 1300 feet at the western boundary Sequoia National Park faces an acute fire hazard during the Summer months Nevertheless the perk has an enviable record in fire suppression Last year National Park Service personnel In aome rases with the help of the state division of forestry and the United States Forest Service fought forty seven fires in and adjacent to Sequoia National Park confining the total area burned to approximately 3000 acres (Ings Sheriff Names Two New Deputies HANFORD (Kings Co) June 26 Loftis today announced the appointment of two additional deputies Kenneth Kerby of Hanford to be
