"I took to the serial immediately since it was about an Irish family," continued Miss De-Haven who says that her real family name was O'Callahan before her father legally changed his name to De-Haven. REICHARDT Last month "Ryan's Hope" scored quite a coup by signing lovely 58-year-old actress (she readily admits to he age) Gloria DeHaven to the cast as Bess Shelby. "I'm excited about thet role," said Miss whom soap opera buffs will remember from a short stint on "As the World Turns" in 1966 when she portrayed Sara Fuller. "I've always admired soap opera actors because they have so much to do and so little time (production-wise) to do it in." Her character on "RH" is a down-and-out waitress who lives in a crumbling house trailer with her teen-age daughter, Maggie. When Bess was at her lowest ebb financially she picked up a magazine and low and behold staring at her from the cover was her long-lost illegitimate, and now wealthy, daughter Jillian Coleridge.

Needless to say Bess and Maggie made plans to pack their duffle bags and head for the Coleridge family home in New York City. "The role is a real stretch for me," says Miss DeHaven who has almost always portrayed upscale and glamorous lady roles in films and prime-time TV. "The character of Bess is diversified. She's tacky. She's never without her can of beer, and who knows, she could even jump up on a table and sing.

Whether Bess sings or not on "RH" remains to be seen. But Miss DeHaven, who was virtually born in the proverbial trunk (her parents were the famous vaudevillians Mr. and Mrs. Carter DeHaven) is well-known for her vocal talents, which were showcased in such '40s and '50s films as "Two Girls and a Sailor," "Summer Holiday," and "Step Lively" in which she received her first screen kiss I Start Planning Now a lew "Small Improvements" or a "Major Face for your Lawn or Please call us aay-ejifw for estimates.
