Lewis University soccer coach Alex Hernandez has announced that Tinley Park Andrew High School's all-state goalie Joe Butera is the third prep standout this year to sign a national letter of intent to play NCAA Division II soccer for the Flyers. The two-time all-area performer guided Andrew to an Illinois High School Association Regional championship and 15-4 record last fall by recording 11 shutouts and allowing only 1.3 goals per game. A 5-11, 190-pounder, Butera was a four-year letterman for coach Mike Backer, earning all SICA West honors three of those years. He helped Andrew High School amass a 45-18-5 record and a pair of third place SICA West finishes during his career.

"I'm excited about the future of Joe as a goalie for the Flyers," Hernandez said. "I have no doubt that he will help Lewis retain its prominence as on NCAA Division II soccer power during his career. Joe has impressed me with his fL-ld awareness and ability to read the game on the field. "He possesses good agility for an athlete his size," Hernandez continued, "and as a goalkeeper, his size will help him dictate play in the goalie area. I saw several of Joe's high school games and have taken a liking to his technical skills." Butera is a son of Nancy Butera of Tinley Park and plans to major in business at Lewis.

Nationally, Lewis ended the 1988 season ranked 16th in the final NCAA Division II poll, marking nine consecutive weeks in the top 20. Only 12 teams were selected for the national tournament and Lewis ranked during the season as high as eighth in the national polls. The Flyers compete in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and finished second in the 1988 league playoffs after compiling an 8-0 record during the regular season. Lewis has won the GLVC title two of the last four years. Santa Fe point standings LATE MODEL lm COMPLETE I 2o9 A.P.R.
