In 1884, John B. Meyenberg of St.

Louis patented evaporated milk. In 1885, Vice President Thomas A. Hendricks died at the age of 66, eight months after taking office. In 1920, radio station WTAW of College Station, Texas, broadcast the first play-by-play description of a football game, between the University of Texas and Texas In 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower suffered a slight stroke.

In 1973, Greek President George Papadopoulos was ousted in a bloodless military coup. In 1974, former U.N. Secretary-General Thant died in New Hork of cancer at the age of 65. Ten years ago: Paratroopers and other regiments went into open rebellion against the government of Portugal. Military leaders took strong action to crush the revolt.

SEABELL P. MILLER NEWBERRY Mrs. Seabell Padgett Miller, 82, widow of Joe M. Miller, died Saturday. Born in Saluda County, she was a daughter of the late Davis J.

and Mary Catherine McLeon Padgett. She was a retired employee of Kendall Oakland Baptist Church and the Oakland Retirees Club. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. (Elizabeth) Brown of Jupiter, son, James E. Miller of Newberry; four sisters, Mrs.

Ruth Corley of Saluda, Mrs. Mrs. 1 Leona Satterfield of Duncan, Eva Langford of Leesville and Mrs. Rhoda McCarty of Augusta; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m.

Tuesday at Whitaker Funeral Home with burial in Newberry Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Hunt Memorial Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. E.L. SANDERS E.L.

Sanders, 88, of 128 Sanders Drive, husband of Mrs. Mayme Edmonds Sanders, died this morning at his home. Born in Forsyth County, Jan. 1, 1897, he was a son of the late E.L. and Minnie Dame Sanders.

He was a graduate of Greenwood High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War I. He was a retired employee of Coleman Realty Co. and was formerly employed by Bolton's Clothing Store. He was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post No.

20 and the Forty and Eight Club. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home; are two brothers, S. Brown Sanders of Charleston and Ralph D. Sanders Laurinburg, N.C.; and nieces and nephews. Services will be at 3 p.m.

Tuesday in Magnolia Cemetery with Dr. C.J. Jr. and Dr. Bryce Herbert officiating.

Mildred Powell Ryder, 62, wife of Paul L. Ryder, died Saturday. Born in Saluda, she was a daughter of the late John S. and Annie Mae Norris Powell. Surviving in addition to her husband; are a daughter, Mrs.

Daniel (Cathy) Krzywiecki of Eighty-four, sisters, Mrs. Gwyen (Thelma) Rodgers of Edgefield and Mrs. Cephas (Elizabeth) Rodgers and Mrs. James (Louise) Blackwell of Saluda; and a brother, David Powell of Langley. Services will be announced by Ramey Funeral Home of Saluda.

ROBERT B. WHAM MOUNTVILLE Robert Brooks Wham, infant son of Joseph W. and Karen Livingston Wham, died Saturday. Surviving in addition to his parents of Mountville; are two brothers, Jay and Allen Wham, both of Mountville; his maternal grandfather, John N. of Cross Hill; his paternal grandparents, Mr.

and Mellette Wham Sr. of Mountville; and his paternal great-grandmother, Mrs. George S. Wham of Sumter. Services were at 11 a.m.

Hughes, 89, wife of Anor Hughes, died Sunday. Born in 'Saginaw, she was a daughter the late Peter and Ernestine Altman Schoerner. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jacob (Maxine) Ewing of Saluda and Mrs. Agnes Clark of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Elton Hughes of Burlington, and grandchildren and grandchildren.

Services will be Wednesday at Heeny-Sundquist Funeral Home of Farmington, Mich. Burial will be in Oakland Hills Memorial Gardens in Novi, Mich. Ramey Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements. MARY F. ELMORE Services for Mary Ann Fisher Elmore will be at 3 p.m.

MRS. ESTHER H. MIMS JOHNSTON Mrs. Esther Holt Mims, 88, wife of the Rev. Dwight W.

Mims, died Friday. Born in Spartanburg, she was a daughter of Mrs. Eunice Parnell Holt and the late Rev. J.R. Holt.

She was a graduate of Winthrop College and a teacher at Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield County. She was a member of Johnston United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to her husband; her mother of Summerville; are a daughter, Miss Hillary Mims of Johnston; a son, Brian Mims of Johnston; three sisters, Marion White of Columbia, Mrs. James Carnes of Lancaster and Mrs. Abbie Beech of Summerville; and a brother, Grier T.

Holt of Omaha, Neb. Services were at 4 p.m. Sunday at Johnston United Methodist Church with burial in Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Johnston United Methodist Church building fund or the Harmony United Methodist Church renovation fund. Clark-Bland Funeral Home was in charge.

JACK HALTIWANGER JOHNSTON Gordon Forrest "Jack" Haltiwanger, 62, husband of Mrs. Wadine Fain Haltiwanger, died Sunday. Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Gordon Pierce and Ethel Forrest Haltiwanger. He was a veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Milliken Co. He was a member of Kadosh Masonic Lodge and the American Legion Post No.

154. Surviving in addition to his wife; are three daughters, Mrs. Jackie H. Bartley and Mrs. Ethel H.

Ray, both of Johnston and Mrs. Carol H. McDowell of Edgefield; two sons, L. Forrest and Gordon L. Haltiwanger, both of Johnston; and grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Clark-Bland Funeral Home with burial in Travis Park Cemetery in Saluda. MRS. JULIA J. DERRICK PROSPERITY Mrs.

Julia Jefferson Derrick, 76, widow of Josey Haskell Derrick, died Sunday. Born in Macon, she was a daughter of the late Harold and Nannie Smith Jefferson. She was a retired employee of Newberry Mills, a member of Zion United Heart Group, the Laura BedenMethodist me Church, the Young baugh Circle and the Lydia Bible Class. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Josie Hiller and Mrs.

Gerald (Miriam) Reuter, both of Prosperity, Mrs. Nelson (Virginia) Hartley of Batesville and Mrs. Thomas (Rebecca Christine) Richbourg of Leesville; two sons, Joel Derrick of Newberry and R. Ibra Derrick of Greenwood; and grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be at 3:30 p.m.

JIM FULLER Jim Millard Fuller, 68, of 1403 Mathis Road, husband of Mary Frances Goodwin Fuller, died Saturday at Self Memorial Hospital. Born in Stevens County, Georgia a son of the late Meade and Blade Murray Fuller, he was retired from Greenwood Mills, was a veteran of World War II and was a member of Rock Presbyterian Church. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home; are three sons, Jim Fuller William Douglas Fuller and David Paul Fuller, all of Greenwood; four daughters, Miss Mary Faye Fuller and Mrs.

Rebecca Diane Woods, both of Greenwood, Mrs. Hewett of Ninety Six and Mrs. Joyce Norris of Columbia; five sisters, Mrs. Mae Belle Chastine of Anderson, Mrs. Lonie Woods of Greenville, Mrs.

Mamie Woods, Mrs. Lola Woods, and Mrs. Rachel Burdett, all of Seneca; two brothers, Grady Fuller of Greenville and George Fuller of Easley; eleven grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev.

E.A. Cooper and the Rev. A.L. Tumblin officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

MRS. RACHEAL A. BAYLOR Mrs. Racheal Adams Baylor, 87, of 109 Peachtree widow of Floyd Baylor, died Saturday at Self Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenwood County, March 6, 1896, she was a daughter of the late Peter and Mamie Louden Adams.

She was a member of Marshall Chapel Baptist Church and the Woman's Aide Society No. 11. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Surviving are five nieces raised in the home, Mrs. Annetta Reid, Mrs.

Bessie Baylor, Miss Angelia Reid, and Miss Leshay Reid, all of Greenwood; and three nephews raised the home, Archie and John L. Reid and the Rev. Johnny Strong, all of Greenwood. Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Service. The family is at the home of a niece, Mrs.

Bessie Baylor, 649 McLees St. MRS. ALPHA KAY DONALDS Mrs. Alpha Maddox Kay, 91, of Route 2, widow of Willie Murff Kay, died Sunday at St. Joseph's Hospital in Augusta, Ga.

Born in Anderson County, she was a daughter of the late Robert K. and Amanda Branyon Maddox. She was a member of Donalds Baptist Church. Surviving are a son, William M. Kay of Donalds; a daughter, Mrs.

Robert C. (Catherine) Uldrick of Donalds; two brothers, J. Harold Maddox of Earl Maddox of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister, Mrs. Luther (Estee) Kay of Honea Path; and grandchildren and eight great children. Services will be at 11 a.m.

Tuesday at Pruitt Funeral Home of Honea Path with Dr. Ralph Hall officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories. The body is at the funeral home, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight. The family is at the home of her son, William Kay, Route 2.

MRS. FRANCES McKITTRICK CROSS HILL Mrs. Frances Johnson McKittrick, 72, of Route 1, wife of George William McKittrick, died Sunday at her home. Born in Harding, she was a daughter of the late Arch Alfred and Nina Cook Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of Mountville Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband; are six sons, James A. McKittrick of Cross Hill, Bill McKittrick of Laurens, Raymond McKittrick of Suffolk, Bobby McKittrick of Belton, Harold McKittrick of Anderson and Tommy McKittrick of Simpsonville; three daughters, Mrs. Marian Gray Barker of Watertown, Joanna N.Y., and Mrs. Mrs. Sylvia Sara Tinsley Moon of Mountville; 27 grandchildren and 23 Services grand be at 2 p.m.

"Rusty" Proctor, 57, of 208 Oakland Drive, husband of Gloria Galloway Proctor, died this morning at Self Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenwood, a son of the late James Daniel and Dessie Butler Proctor, he was employed by Greenwood Specialty and was the manager of Emeral Lanes, Inc. He was of the Baptis faith and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. Surviving in additon to his wife of the home; is a Robert Daniel Proctor of Greenwood; two sisters, Mrs. Kathryn Fields and Mrs.

Mary Shipes, both of Greenwood; four brothers, Frank Proctor of Belton, Howard Proctor of Augusta, Earl "Red" and Charles A. Proctor, both of Greenwood, two grandchildren. Services will be a 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harley Funeral Home with the Rev. Reuel Westbrook officiating.

Burial will be in Oakbrook Memorial Park. Pall bearers will be Sam Marse, Henry Morgan, Ricky Young, Harry Herring, Terry Scott, Hugh Teasley, Harold Smith, and Bart Woodard. Honorary escort will be Kibler Bowers, Wade Batson, Gray Ackerman, Tom Cox, Russell Clem, Robert Coleman, Vernon Whitmire, Ron Eckerd, Jack Cartee, Barbara Ellis, Buddie Ledford, and William Waites. She was a native of Edgefield and lived in Washington D.C. for a number of years. She was a member and choir leader of Pleasant Grove Bapist Church in Edgefield and was a member of the Woman's Club and Pleasant Grove Burial Aide Society.

Surviving are four daughters, Annie Cathran, Ruth Cathern, Mattie Bonds and Lillie Starks, all of Washington, D.C.; and two sons, Olando Simmons of Edgefield and Freddie Simmons of Washington, D.C. Services will be announced by Blalock Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Delores Simmons, Route 1 or at the funeral home. AMOS F. CUNNINGHAM GREENVILLE Amos F.

Cunningham, 81, of Towers East, husband of Mrs. Louise Lott Cunningham, died Sunday at his home. Born in Hartwell, he was a son of the late James Fleming and Luna Smith Cunningham. He was a retired sales representative with Masury-Columbia Co. and after retiring, was associated with Allied Van Lines.

He was a charter member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and the Men's Bible Class. Surviving are four daughters, Ms. Margaret Huskey, Mrs. Fred E.

(Louise) Robinson and Mrs. J. Rodney (Ellen) Jordan, all of Greenville and Mrs. Kenneth B. (Anne) Mouw of Greenwood; two brothers, William Clarke and the Rev.

Harold E. Cunnihgham, both of Greenville; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday a at St. Matthew United Methodist Church with Dr.

James E. Hunter officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at The Mackey Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the Hospice Program of Greenville Memorial Hospital or to the Easter Seals Society.
